Asheville Startup MobRocket T-Minus 1 Day Until Launch

A local startup is gearing up to blast off May 20th, 2015. MobRocket, brainchild of David Bentley is launching out of the gate with one pursuit in mind: take down popular deals website Groupon. Since its inception in 2008,  Groupon has been helping businesses reach new customers by using their deals related online platform. The premise behind the popular website is that consumers purchase a product at a significantly reduced price. The vendors pay Groupon to promote the deal, and a portion of the profits for the sale in exchange for placing the product in front of customers. The sales giant reaches businesses in over 500 worldwide markets, and is currently valued at over $1 billion dollars.

Students Speak: Bras Part of Dress Code at AHS?

Wednesday, May 13th there was announcement made at Asheville High School that sent tidal waves through the school. According to accounts from students, Principal Joyce Best has now mandated that proper undergarments are a requirement for female students. Specifically, girls are required to wear bras to adhere to the dress code policy. This outraged students, who brought the report back to their parents.

Asheville Wine & Food Festival’s “Amuse” Does Not Disappoint

Asheville's seventh annual Wine and Food Festival had its first phases of its culinary competition on Friday, May 1st, with "Amuse." At this pre-festival event, five chefs and six mixologists were to take an ingredient or two from an amusement park or circus and use it as inspiration to produce bite-sized original dishes. The winners of this competition will go on to compete at the Grand Tasting and Elixir later this summer.

Local Radio WCQS Announces New CEO

Western North Carolina Public Radio, 88.1 FM, has named their new CEO following the retirement of former president and CEO Jody Evans. David Feingold will be joining the public funded radio, stationed in Asheville, in July of this year. WCQS is a local nonprofit organization that has been operating in Asheville since 1979. The station currently broadcasts from studios on the campus of UNCA.
