I’m not selfish – I don’t want children

There is a huge push in our society to raise children, especially here in the South. Most women are born and bred to go to school, get married, and have children - in that order. Sometimes I feel like we have been raised in such a society that you may not realize that you have been predestined for a certain track in life, and you don't question that trail - you just take it. Being a mom is often proclaimed to be the most important job in the world - and I'm not here to dispute that fact. Without my own parents, my mom especially, I would not be here today. However, just because my parents made the decision to procreate and bring another child into this world, does not mean that I have any obligation to do so myself.

Asheville Sessions: Soldier’s Heart

We did something a little different this week - we took a small road trip out of Asheville and went to Frog Level Brewing in Waynesville, North Carolina. Out on the back porch in the sunshine by the river, we recorded a band called Soldier's Heart. These fellas are are a Southern Appalachian Folk/Roots band. They have their own brand of music of what they call "Honest Porch and Soul", and judging by the number of fans that were gathered to eagerly watch our live session, they live up to their own branding. Soldier's Heart music brings the kind of down home satisfaction to the ear that a fine home cooked meal does to the belly. This seven piece band is compromised of members Caleb Buress on guitar and vocals; Joey Fortner on banjo and vocals; Chris McElrath; Jeff Mendenhall on fiddle; Rick Shore on drums/percussion; and Zack Edwards on Bass.

A First Timer’s Reaction To Geek Out

This year was my first year attending the local popular arts festival known as Geek Out. As someone who has always been deemed something of a nerd, I was delighted to be surrounded by my fellow geeks, although I have to say that a lot of people are way more dedicated to their craft than I am - and I salute you! Geek Out was a blast and I really enjoyed getting the two day pass to attend both days of the event. It was held at UNCA at the Sherrill Center, and featured panels, vendors, demonstrations, parades, contests, and even a wedding.

Dogged

Being dogged is a good thing, at least in the sense I mean it. To me, “dogged” means “having a dog”, and I’ve been dogged for almost all of my almost 74 years.
The first dog was Smoky. He was a black Lab/mystery rescue. I don’t remember much about him, partly because he was only with us a few weeks before running away, partly because I was just a little kid when he was with us. Then we/I had, in order, Lassie, Timmy, Sandy, Arnold, Arthur, Igor, Zelda, Linus, Gonja, Sammy, Casey, Dooley, Nick, Remmy, Missy and Rosie. If you keep reading this blog, you’ll learn about every one of these four-footed blessings. But we’ll start with Lassie.
