The Organizing Committee of the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018 (WEG) is proud to announce the non-profit organization Brooke, Action for Working Horses and Donkeys, has been chosen as the “Official Charity for the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018” taking place at Tryon International Equestrian Center in North Carolina, USA this September 11 through 23.

The WEG, which takes place every four years, is the major international championship event for the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) regulated-disciplines of Jumping, Dressage and Para-Equestrian Dressage, Eventing, Driving, Endurance, Vaulting and Reining. This year, the WEG will be held at the 1,600-acre Tryon International Equestrian Center at Tryon Resort, co-founded in 2014 by the Tryon Equestrian Partners, which is comprised of six equestrian families who are all committed to the long-term development and growth of equestrian sport: Mark and Katherine Bellissimo, Roger and Jennifer Smith, Lisa Lourie, Jenji and Diana Mercer, Howard and Gwen Dvorkin, and Joe and Cindy Mitchell.

Headquartered in the UK, Brooke is an international charity that protects and improves the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules, whose labour keeps millions of poor families in developing countries around the world out of poverty.

The partnership is courtesy of Katherine Bellissimo, who serves on the board of sister organization Brooke USA. Brooke USA is dedicated to significantly improving the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules and the people they serve throughout Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America by raising funds and responsibly directing them to the areas of greatest need.

The overarching theme for the 2018 WEG is “Celebrate the Horse, Celebrate the Sport: #Together,” which commemorates the deep connection and interdependencies that have existed between humankind and equines for millennia. For much of the developed world, this relationship has become one of leisure and sport, but for over 600 million people, the relationship is still one of survival.

Bellissimo has championed Brooke’s work for a number of years before becoming part of Brooke USA in April 2016.

“I am pleased to have Brooke named as the official charity of the FEI World Equestrian Games Tryon 2018. The work that Brooke and Brooke USA do for both horses and humans around the world is incredibly admirable and embodies our organization’s goal of celebrating the ways we depend on this beautiful creature through this event. It is only natural that the world’s largest working equine welfare charity be chosen as a beneficiary of the world’s largest equestrian competition.

“Brooke USA is one of only two boards I choose to serve on and it’s because I believe our work has a great and lasting impact on Brooke’s global efforts, not only for the equines but also the humans who rely on them.”

Petra Ingram, Chief Executive of Brooke said:

“100 million horses, donkeys and mules around the world are doing the hardest jobs in extreme environments, from the brick kilns of Nepal to the coal mines of Pakistan and the small farms of Ethiopia and Nicaragua, they are paying the price for their labour with injuries, exhaustion, dehydration and malnutrition. Brooke works to make long lasting improvements to their lives.

“We are so proud to be a part of WEG this year. The theme of humans and equines through time also ties in with our Every Horse Remembered campaign, which honours the horses who worked side by side with soldiers in World War One. We’re looking forward to working together with Tryon International Equestrian Center to organise Brooke themed activities and raise funds for working horses, donkeys and mules around the world.”

As the “Official Charity of the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018,” Brooke is planning to build a commemorative walkway called Brooke Breezeway at Tryon International Equestrian Center that will feature dedicated “Brooke Bricks” in honor of both this iconic event and the important service provided by working equines around the world. “Brooke Bricks” will be made of bricks manufactured humanely in the United States and can be purchased online at BrookeBricks.org, a custom Brooke USA microsite, and be installed in dedication of a person, horse or organization. The website will launch later in the year.

Brooke USA and TIEC’s “Shade the Donkeys” Event to Feature Celebrity Bartenders Including Sinead Halpin-Maynard, Allison Springer, JJ Tate, and Tik Maynard!

The second annual Brooke USA fundraiser held during the USEA American Eventing Championships presented by Land Rover and Nutrena® at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), kick off Friday, September 1, with the “Shade the Donkeys” event. Taking place under the Announcer’s Tower from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. the event will feature Sinead Halpin-Maynard, Tik Maynard, Allison Springer, and JJ Tate each making appearances behind the bar.

TIEC has proudly partnered with Brooke USA for two years during the entertaining and action-packed AEC week, with last year’s “Buy A Donkey A Drink” campaign hosted at Roger’s Diner, raising over $5,000 for working equines and donkeys in underdeveloped countries in an effort to provide necessary access to fresh water through the purchase of large water troughs. This year’s event will take place underneath of the Announcer’s Tower at TIEC, and will once again benefit the organization’s initiative to aid working equines in need, this year focusing on constructing lifesaving shelters and watering points for horses and donkeys in Ethiopia.

Drinks will be served from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. alongside a highly anticipated silent auction with numerous items up for grabs including gift baskets, riding lessons, and more. Mini-horse appearances will also accompany official event activities throughout the evening ahead of the second Gladiator Polo™ match at TIEC, beginning at 8:00 p.m.

Celebrity bartenders will be on rotation serving speciality drinks and include some of the sport’s top riders, from Olympians to local legends.

Sinead Halpin-Maynard of Long Valley, NJ, is an international competitor and trainer who has been riding at the Advanced level since 1999. Halpin-Maynard was named to the United States Equestrian Team for the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France in 2014 aboard Manoir de Carneville, the USEF 2012 Horse of Honor, and with “Tate,” she has had several top-ten results at the hardest events in the world, most notably finishing in 2nd place finish at the prestigious Burghley CCI4* in 2012. Sinead’s husband Tik Maynard, who grew up in Vancouver and got into eventing at the age of 26, is known for combining his love of horsemanship and performance, most notably when he was the freestyle division winner at the 2015 Thoroughbred Makeover with “Remarkable 54.”

Allison Springer of Upperville, VA, rides and coaches throughout the country and was named to the USEF High Performance World Class Training List in 2013. An alternate to the 2012 London Olympic team, Springer’s ultimate goal is to represent the United States in Olympic competition. Springer placed top 20 in the $100,000 Wellington Eventing Showcase this year, and most recently took first at the Pedigree CCI2* 2017.

Based in Landrum, SC, JJ Tate is known for her talent as a dressage rider, trainer and clinician, and made her FEI debut at the age of 16. She has earned numerous national and regional titles, been long-listed for the World Equestrian Games and represented the United States in competitions abroad.

Celebrity bartenders will be serving specialty cocktails available alongside a silent auction to benefit Brooke USA from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., so be sure to swing by the lounge to buy a drink from your favorite USEA celebrity, check out amazing items up for grabs, and support Brooke USA’s official “Free the Donkeys – Give Them Shade!” initiative. Tryon International Equestrian Center Prepares For Fall 2017 Dressage CDI-W & CPEDI3*

This fall, Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) will host to the Fall Dressage FEI CDI-W & CPEDI 3* and USEF National Show presented by Adequan®, which will take place at the venue during the third weekend of September, opening on Thursday, September 14, and concluding Sunday, September 17.

The second international dressage competition of the 2017 season follows the FEI CDI 3* hosted at the venue in late April, which featured top riders from the United States and Canada, including U.S. rider, Katie Poag, who captured the first CDI 3* Grand Prix win of the TIEC 2017 season aboard Zonnekoning. Commenting on the convenience of an FEI CDI in the Carolina’s region, Poag, who is based in South Carolina, said, “We really enjoy coming here. We were here last year for the first CDI in April and then returned in September for the second CDI just to school around. I’m looking forward to coming here more and it feels like it’s in my backyard. I’m from North Carolina and now we live in South Carolina, so I’m familiar with this area. It feels like we’re home.”

The Tryon Fall CDI-W & CPEDI 3* will take place from September 14-17 at TIEC. Entries for the show close on September 5.

Competition also saw Canadian rider, Megan Lane, who was selected to represent her home nation of Canada at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as well as Ashley Holzer, who represented the United States for the first time internationally after representing Canada at the highest levels of competition for majority of her career, competing at the 1988, 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympic Games. Holzer finished a successful week at the venue, taking the top spot in the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle with new mount Havanna 145, a 2007 Hanoverian mare (Hochadel x Rodgau) owned by Diane Fellows.

The CPEDI 3* will feature para-dressage riders from across the country, competing at grades I-V. The main goal of para-dressage is to provide opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities. Paralympic sports allow the athletes to excel in sports designed for the able-bodied, and do so by creating a structured and highly competitive environment.

Alongside the Fall Dressage CDI-W & CPEDI 3* presented by Adequan®, the venue will also welcome the second championship caliber competition for the sport of eventing in the weeks prior to the start of the FEI CDI-W & CPEDI 3*, as the Nutrena® USEA American Eventing Championships are set to begin Wednesday, August 30, and continue through Sunday, September 3.

Entries for the Fall Dressage CDI-W & CPEDI 3* and USEF National Show presented by Adequan®, are now open, and will close on September 5.

Tryon International Equestrian Center Set to Host 2017 Dressage Instructors Seminar from September 12-15

Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) proudly presents the 2017 Dressage Instructors Seminar from Tuesday, September 12, through Friday, September 15. TIEC, home of the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018, will host its ever first Dressage Trainer Seminar featuring three internationally renowned instructor trainers: Barbro Ask-Upmark, Education Manager for Tryon International Equestrian Center; Jodi Lees, USEF “S” Dressage Judge; and Randi Thompson, CEO of the Horse and Rider Awareness Educational Programs.

The seminar will focus on innovative teaching techniques and feature hands-on practice with demonstration riders of all levels. The seminar will also provide guidance on how to improve student scores by understanding what competition judges look for during a test, as well as expanding, promoting and protecting horse businesses, and riding and teaching with the Equine Simulator at Tryon International Equestrian Center.

Ask-Upmark said she is very excited to be hosting and instructing during this event. “We are going to take the instructors who attend to a new level of success, as we are able to offer an all-inclusive educational experience, a CDI 3* dressage competition and the equine simulator, that can show them how to ride and teach movements through Grand Prix,” she stated.

“It’s important for the horse industry that trainers are the best they can be. To teach someone how to ride their horse is a huge responsibility and should not be taken lightly,” she said. “To stay informed and updated with latest teaching techniques shows your clients that you truly care and want to give them the best. This is why I have dedicated my last 11 years to work with the English company, Racewood, to develop this state-of-the-art Equine Simulator. This newest model of simulator can do every discipline, including all levels of dressage movements. Our simulator at Tryon is helping riders to reach levels they never thought possible.”

Lees stated that the Dressage Instructors Seminar was designed to enhance the effectiveness of instructors in both their teaching skills and in the management of their business. “We will have discussions about training, teaching and business concepts specifically pertaining to dressage instructors. There will be a discussion on different movements that reveals how the judge comes up with a score and why,” she commented.

Lees also noted that hosting the seminar at TIEC will allow for a hands-on learning experience: “On day three we will focus on what the judge is seeing at the Tryon Fall Dressage CDI 3* at TIEC. It is important for instructors to know what modifies the scores up and down so that they can focus on what is correct when teaching their students.”

Thompson commented that all three Dressage Instructors Seminar host instructors know what attendees need to do to succeed in the horse business, and are committed to sharing the steps to success that will make a difference for them.

“To be successful as a dressage instructor is much more than coaching riders or training horses, you need to know how to network with other professionals and also how operate as a business both professionally and legally. Barbro, Jodi and I have joined together to share years of experience as successful professionals in the horse world with those who will be attending,” she said. “We are honored to be hosted by the Tryon International Equestrian Center and look forward to presenting the 2017 Dressage Instructor’s Seminar at their world-class facility.”

Gladiator Polo™ Draws Record Crowds and Prepares for Fall Series at TIEC Starting September 1st

Gladiator Polo™ has taken the equestrian world by storm, bringing together troves of fans from around the country to experience this new high-growth horse sport. With a successful inaugural season in Wellington, FL, during the winter of 2017 and an immensely popular showcase game at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) in late June, worldwide interest and awareness of the game has increased significantly setting the table for a number of national and international initiatives that will be announced in the next month.

The Gladiator Polo™ $120,000 “Battle for the Carolinas” Fall Series, featuring four teams battling to claim the championship title and $120,000 in prize money throughout the series, will begin on Friday, September 1 and continue through the end of the month. Two teams from each of the Carolinas will battle for their respective states and finish the series with a North Carolina versus South Carolina clash not to be missed on Saturday, September 30.

Mark Bellissimo is preparing to announce the launch of new Gladiator Polo™ initiatives at the end of the month in conjunction with the “Battle for the Carolinas” Fall Series at TIEC.

“I’m thrilled to bring new energy to the world’s oldest team sport and revitalize polo on a global scale,” said Bellissimo. “The players and the league are already seeing increased enthusiasm for polo because of this modern approach. We look forward to dramatically expanding interest for players, fans, and sponsors.”

The series kicks off with the “Battle for South Carolina” with Team Greenville against Team Spartanburg on Friday, September 1. Carlucho Arellano, Mariano Obregon, and Pelon Escapite will wear black for Team Greenville, while Juan Martin Obregon, Jeff Hall, and Alan Martinez will wear red for Spartanburg.

The “Battle for North Carolina” will feature Team Charlotte against Team Asheville and take place on Saturday, September 9, as an installment of TIEC’s signature “Saturday Night Lights” (SNL) events. Team Charlotte, in teal, will see the return of Santi Torres, Jared Zenni, and Facundo Obregon, while Team Asheville will be represented by Geronimo Obregon, Jason Crowder, and Costi Caset in purple. The “Battle for the Carolinas” series championship will see the clash of the two winning teams on Saturday, September 30.

In September, Bellissimo will provide details for an enhanced Professional Gladiator Polo™ League, which will launch in Wellington, FL, during the winter of 2018. The Professional Gladiator Polo™ League will include a highly publicized player draft and feature team owners, similar to the most popular major league sports in North America. Eight teams will test their skills throughout the season in hopes of collecting a percentage of the minimum $500,000 of prize money offered through the duration of the series.

The Gladiator Polo™ “Battle of the Carolinas” Fall Series will begin Friday, September 1, and feature three weeks of top play at Tryon International Equestrian Center.

Gladiator Polo™ Manager Gates Gridley is looking forward to an action-packed fall series at Tryon Resort and the transition of Gladiator Polo™ back to Wellington, FL, later this year.

“Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from fans and players at Tryon’s debut Gladiator Polo™ match in June, it was clear that we needed to expand the sport and give fans more of this modern spin on traditional polo,” said Gridley. “We are excited to bring back the two teams and expand into a full fall series this September, as well as looking forward to the future of Gladiator Polo™ in Wellington.”
