It’s Happy Hour at the WNC Nature Center

On Friday, May 11 from 5:30-8:00PM the WNC Nature Center will host the first Brews and Bears event of their 2018 season! Due to the popularity of this after-hours event, there will be three occurrences this year: May 11, July 13, and September 14.

“Brews and Bears has sold out each year we’ve had it, and people enjoy it so much. This year we added two more dates to make sure that everyone who wants to join in can do so,” said Kelly Shanafelt, Executive Director of the Friends of the WNC Nature. The fundraiser gives attendees the rare opportunity to visit the Nature Center past 5PM. “Many of our animals are more active in the evening and guests really enjoy seeing them in this different setting,” said Shanafelt.

The May 11 happy hour celebration will feature beer from Highland Brewing Company and cider from Black Mountain Ciderworks. Food will be available for purchase from Melt Your Heart and The Hop Ice Cream Co. There will be music and yard games, and guests will have the chance to view an exciting enrichment activity for black bears, Uno and Ursa.

Admission to Brews & Bears is $8 for Friends of the WNC Nature Center members, and $10 for non-members. The event is intended primarily for adults, although youth are welcome to attend with the purchase of a ticket. Children under 2 are free. Tickets are available online at www.wildwnc.org/event or in person at the Center. Proceeds from both ticket and beverage sales will go to support the Friends of the WNC Nature Center. The May 11th Brews and Bears event is sponsored by Carolina Alliance Bank, Festiva, and The Biltmore Company.

The Friends’ mission is to support the programs, facilities and the residents of the Western North Carolina Nature Center, which showcases the fauna and flora of the southern Appalachian region. The WNC Nature Center connects people with the animals and plants of the Southern Appalachian Mountain region by inspiring appreciation, nurturing understanding, and advancing conservation of the region’s rich biodiversity.  2018 Festival to Take Place July 26-29

Asheville Yoga Festival is pleased to announce the 2018 schedule. Taking place July 26th through 29th, the festival will feature over 30 presenters and 90+ offerings, ranging from yoga to music to meditation to outdoor recreation.

Now in its second year under the ownership and direction of Asheville residents and veteran yoga practitioners Amanda Hale and Sara Levine LaStella, Asheville Yoga Festival aims to build on last year’s success and continue its growth toward becoming the Southeast’s preeminent yoga festival.

“This year’s festival feels even more thoughtful and impactful than our first year,” said LaStella. “We are bringing together an incredibly qualified group of instructors to teach traditional methods of yoga alongside some current topics that are close to our hearts, such as gender identity, diversity, body positivity and the yoga practice outside of the classroom. Our hope is that everyone feels as though this festival was created for them and that they walk away feeling filled up and more connected, inside and out.”

This year’s lineup again brings together many notable local and nationally recognized instructors to create an immersive experience and expose festival goers to a wide variety of yoga styles and philosophies.

  • 2018 Scheduled Presenters:
  • MC YOGI Sara Clark
  • Stephanie Snyder
  • Chelsey Korus
  • Michael Johnson
  • Sean Johnson & The Wild Lotus Band
  • Taylor Harkness
  • Jean Jacques Gabriel
  • Tymi Howard
  • Chelsea Jackson Roberts
  • Lillah Schwartz

  • Stephanie Keach

The Festival will again utilize indoor and outdoor venues throughout downtown Asheville, including Pack Square Park, the YMI Cultural Center, Hilton Garden Inn, and the Masonic Temple. New locations this year include the AC Marriott and The Asheville Social Hall. The footprint makes it easy for festival goers to walk from venue to venue, while being exposed to the vibrant culture of downtown.

The Mountain Air Market in Pack Square will be open to the public again this year, giving everyone the opportunity to listen to live music, view and participate in various demonstrations, and explore an exceptional mix of health and wellness businesses, both local and from across the country. There will also be a daily community yoga practice that’s open to the public at no charge.

Stretching beyond yoga practice, festival goers can participate in guided nature hikes, stand-up paddle boarding, educational workshops, evening concerts, and much more. The goal is to take advantage of as many experiences the Asheville area has to offer.

Giving back to the community is also a key component of Asheville Yoga Festival’s guiding philosophy. A portion of the Festival’s proceeds will be donated to local non-profit Light a Path. Light a Path’s mission is to create community and resilience in underserved populations of WNC through offering yoga, mindfulness, and other somatic therapies at no cost. Join Brother Wolf Animal Rescue and other animal lovers on Saturday April 7th from noon-3pm at the Asheville Outlets on Brevard Road for our second annual Kitten Shower!

This fun, family-friendly event will help Brother Wolf prepare for kitten season, which will bring hundreds of cute, cuddly — and expensive! — kittens into their care. Last year alone, Brother Wolf rescued and found loving homes for over 1,300 kittens, with each kitten averaging $200 in supplies, spay/neuter, and other medical costs.

Visitors will enjoy a raffle with fun prizes, delicious cupcakes, kitten bottle feeding demonstrations, and — of course — the opportunity to play with adoptable cats and kittens!

Preparing for kitten season is an integral part of sustain a true No-Kill community. ‘Kitten season’ is a term used by animal rescuers to describe the warm part of the year when cat and kitten intakes drastically increase around the country due to the breeding habits of outdoor unaltered cats.

“We used to be very reactive to kitten season,” says Audrey Lodato, Brother Wolf’s Director of Animal Care, “but we are better prepared now to take proactive measures to help care for pregnant or nursing moms and orphaned kittens, who are some of the most vulnerable animals in our community.

“We have staff and volunteers out in the field every day, responding to calls about cats and orphaned kittens in need,” says Audrey. “Our foster team also hosts regular classes to train volunteers who are interested in fostering kittens, including those who require bottle feeding.”a

The Kitten Shower will serve as a drop-off location for monetary and kitten supply donations, such as wet and dry kitten food, non-clumping cat litter, kitten formula, kitchen scales, and bottle feeding kits. Visitors will also be invited to get involved with caring for kittens through Brother Wolf’s foster and volunteer programs.

For more information about this event, fostering, volunteering, or donating, visit www.bwar.org.

Management Trainer Steve Rudolph Aims to Serve Community with Workshop Series

After five years of offering specialized workshops for the Asheville Independent Restaurant Association, executive coach Steve Rudolph is launching a workshop series designed to serve the needs of the expanding business community of Asheville. Three workshops are planned for the coming months with topics including providing negative feedback to a valued employee and B2B sales.

“Business owners strive to retain great talent,” Rudolph says. “But the side effect of promoting from within is the occasional elevation of an otherwise stellar employee outside of their comfort zone. What makes a great individual producer does not make a great manager.  That’s why I’ve dedicated my life to supporting businesses that support their employees.”

The first workshop is Tuesday, March 22 and focuses on core workplace challenges like communicating culture, dealing with negative employees, and inspiring performance.

Workshop two takes place Thursday, April 19th and teaches core business-to-business sales skills including prospecting, planning, and how to develop a sales process.

The final workshop in this series occurs Thursday, May 24 and is all about flexibility. In this workshop, Steve will teach the difference between a workplace manager, and a workplace coach and when to don each role. He will also teach how to shift leadership styles to meet the needs of his employees.

All workshops occur from 9-2 at the Goodwill Job Training center on Patton and will include lunch.

Steve Rudolph is an International Coaching Federation certified coach and veteran of the restaurant industry. He coaches many businesses in Asheville including a partnership with the Asheville Independent Restaurant Association. He also works nationally with Fortune 500 companies including  Novo Nordisk and regional non-profits like MAHEC.

Come Sunday, chili lovers from all over will be digging into bowls of deliciousness at Sanctuary Brewing Company, 147 1st Ave East in Hendersonville, NC. The popular brewery is hosting its Third Annual Vegan Chili Cookoff on Sunday, February 25th from 2 to 5 p.m., with music by the brotherly harmonic duo, Brother Bluebird.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to enter the mouthwatering contest for a fee of $15. All entries must be completely free from animal products, but otherwise, anything goes! Each entrant needs to bring one full-sized crockpot of their scrumptious creation. Winners will receive a certificate and cast iron skillet, the perfect tool for the home chef. If you’re more of a foodie and less of a cook, you can taste all the chili you want for a fee of $15 for adults, $10 for kids (free under three).

“Our chili cookoff is one of my favorite events of the year,” says Sanctuary co-founder Lisa McDonald. “You’d be blown away by some of the incredible chefs we have in the area and the amazing chili they make – all animal free! Seriously, it’s not-to-be-missed for and anyone who loves great chili.”

Attendees can watch their chili selections down with a whole host of craft beer options from the signature, flavorful Hop Pig IPA to the refreshing Bobby Beer Jr. Kolsch. Sanctuary has 20 rotating taps featuring freshly brewed creations from light to malty to hoppy, plus a new wine menu and cider and non-alcoholic options.

The proceeds from the cookoff will benefit Sweet Bear Rescue Farm, the new 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Sanctuary owners McDonald and Joe Dinan. The farm is home to 19 animals including best friends Ollie the pot-bellied pig and Charlotte the chicken; Maggie and Shadow, two newly adopted goats; George and Paul, turkeys rescued by Farm Sanctuary and who recently joined the fold, and numerous other furry/feathered inhabitants.

Sanctuary Brewing has raised thousands of dollars for charitable causes since its opening in 2015, offers free Sunday meals for anyone in need, and has a Kindness Wall outside the main entrance that’s always stocked with essentials for the local homeless population. Recently featured in Thrive and Our State magazines, Sanctuary has even garnered the attention of big names like comedian Ricky Gervais, ARCA racecar driver Leilani Munter, and filmmaker Kip Anderson (Cowspiracy, What the Health).
