Love chili? Get ready to stuff yourself. For the fourth year in a row, an epic chili battle royale is coming to downtown Hendersonville. The fourth annual vegan Chili Cook-Off kicks off on Sunday, March 10th at 2 p.m. at Sanctuary Brewing Company (SBC), with all proceeds benefiting the amazing animals of local nonprofit Sweet Bear Rescue Farm. The event will feature delicious chili entries from chefs, restaurants, and home cooks across the region. From sweet and spicy to wildly hot, from beans and veggies to beefy Beyond Meat, the chili varieties run the gamut. Attendees will get to taste each and every one, then vote for their favorite. With the help of special guest judge Dr Garth Davis, those who make the three top chilis will score Sanctuary Brewing Company gift cards and other prizes. Anyone is welcome to enter; contestants just need to bring a regular size crockpot of their most amazing vegan chili creation with a creative name and an ingredients list. Local nonprofit organizations, universities, and businesses have teamed up to celebrate Earth Month again this year through a collective effort — WNC for the Planet. The collective partnership will host a month of environmental service, education opportunities and community events across Western North Carolina. As part of the effort, WNC for the Planet launched an online community calendar at WNCfortheplanet.org where the public can learn about various events and volunteer days inspired by Earth Day 2019. “Last year WNC for the Planet collective was well received by the community with over 1300 hours and 50 service projects in our region,” says Anna Zanetti, North Carolina Director of Friends of the Smokies. WNC for the Planet features service opportunities and educational programs for people of all ages, and from all walks of life. Plus New Mardi Gras Beer Pays Homage to King Cake The legendary “PB&J sandwich in a glass,” Peanut Butter Jelly Time (5.7 percent ABV), makes its annual return to the Catawba menu on March 1 with a weekend release party. The beer starts as a light brown ale with a touch of wheat in its malt bill, providing the bready base for the star ingredients – real raspberry puree and whole roasted North Carolina peanuts. Continuing a new tradition started last year, the release party for Peanut Butter Jelly Time will include three specialty variations of the beer in addition to the original Raspberry: Strawberry-Rhubarb, Blackberry, and the debut of Black Currant. Availability Catawba’s most popular Specialty Series beer since 2012, PB&J will be at all four Catawba tasting rooms and the Palmetto Brewing tasting room in Charleston.
