Hustle Souls combine 4 part vocal harmony, roaring trumpet, brilliantly voiced guitar chords, and the most creative rhythm section seen in a long time. With undeniable originality, the music pushes the nostalgic sounds from rustic Memphis to soulful Muscle Shoals into modern and refreshing territory.

On Thursday January 14th 2016, Govinda, Kaminanda and Asheville’s own Captain EZ join forces to bring a night of downtempo bliss to the stage at New Mountain Asheville.

Govinda is the alter-ego of Austin based producer/composer Shane Madden. He began studying violin and composition at the age of eight and went on to study classical violin at the University of Texas where he fell in love with electronic music production.

It was in Madden’s pursuit of his gypsy roots that he opened his ears to music from around the world. From experiences learning violin with mysterious masters on his journeys across the globe and his passion for modern design and technology, the current sound of Govinda was born.

The Govinda live show is truly a multi-sensory experience that features professional dancers, live projections, resonating vocals and a sonical sound-scape. His live experience is full of vibrant energy that plays to its crowd. Govinda performs on Ableton Live accompanied by classical violin.

Govinda is currently touring in support of his album “Universal On Switch” which was released independently earlier this year.

Joining him on Thursday is Kaminanda, whose ever evolving sound is a playground of original deep Midtempo grooves, tribal rhythms, creative trip hop, complex Dub and lush downtempo textures. Playing live sets with guitar, keyboards, flutes, melodica, and vocals,Kaminanda’s music is designed to take the listener/dancer on a journey traversing diverse landscapes reflecting the evolution of our collective consciousness.

Asheville’s own Captain EZ opens up the show, bringing his own unique sound he calls ‘Pimp Smooth’ — a distinctive blend of ghetto funk, glitch, glitch-hop, future bass, hip hop, funk, nu-funk, and chillout — to New Mountain once again.

Tickets are only $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Ages 18+

The Mantras, a group of self-proclaimed North Carolina boys, are gearing up to ring in the New Year the 828 way.

Members Keith Allen, Bryan Tyndall, Brent Vaughn, Julian Sizemore, Justin Loew and Kenn Mogel produce a collaborative sound they call a high-energy mix of funk-rock electronica.

“We try to put everything in the pot we can just to keep it interesting,” percussionist Vaughn said. “A lot of that helps from everybody in the band writing songs, so stuff comes from different directions.”

The Greensboro-based band has spent its fair share of time in Asheville; they estimate they’ve made the trip west on I-40 upwards of 30 times in the past few years.

Formed in the early 2000s, the band has had a few lineup changes, but the sound and the passion has the remained the same.

The Mantras’ last studio album, Jambands Ruined My Life, was released in 2013, but they assure fans new music is on the way.

“We have a new record that should be out first of the year,” Vaughn said. “We’ve been working on it all this year and it’s almost done.”

Details on the name of the new album are unclear, but one thing is for sure – this one was recorded in a whole new way.

“We decided to build our own studio and record the record entirely in house,” keyboardist Sizemore said. “Most of the records that have been done before have been more of a live in the studio process, and this record was totally tracked out. We went into the studio separately, did our parts, built the song, and they’re mixing now!”

The Mantras take the stage on Thursday with Baltimore-based Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, a band they have jammed with in the past.

“We’ve had a working relationship with those guys for a couple years now,” Vaughn said. “We get along with them really well and think it’s a good match musically.”

The guys say their musical goal is simple: keep it going.

“I think we all love what we do, and we want to keep doing it,” Sizemore said. “Just playing is our highlight.”

Catch The Mantras jam at New Mountain Asheville on New Year’s Eve. Doors open for the 21 and up show at 7 p.m., and music begins at 8 p.m.

John Scofield and Jon Cleary have both been busy in 2015, together and on their own. Scofield just returned from a month of touring all of Europe, sitting in with The Roots on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon earlier this year, and kicking off 2015 with a collaboration with Asheville native Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule, dubbed Sco Mule. He also released a new album, called Past Present.

Cleary has been touring heavily in the US and Europe with his backing band, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, showing off the funky soulful content from his latest album GoGo Juice. Cleary has been a staple at the last few Jazz and Heritage Festival, as well as being a returning featured artist at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival for the past couple of years. Cleary is also featured on Scofield’s album Piety Street which was released in 2009.

Scofield and Cleary kicked off their latest tour together in the theatre at New Mountain Asheville last night, treating guests to an intimate set of New Orleans R&B classics. The duo transformed an array of old tunes from greats like Fats Domino and Johnny Guitar Watson into a beautiful blend of New Orleans soul and modern jazz improvisation.

There were a number of high points throughout the night, one of them being a funky rendition of the eight bar blues classic “Junker’s Blues,” a tune that inspired many New Orleans blues classics like Lloyd Price’s “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” and “The Fat Man” by Fats Domino. Cleary referenced the way Professor Longhair played the riffs when he borrowed from it to write the song “Tipitina,” and treated us all to a driving, funky rendition of the classic tune.

Scofield beautifully blended his melodic and spacey guitar riffs over Cleary’s rolling piano throughout the night, and eventually taking off onto some lengthy tangential, psychedelic, and bluesy solos. Scofield particularly leaned into the Johnny “Guitar” Watson song “Cuttin’ In,” which stoked the crowd for a flawless transition into the Little Willie John song, “Fever.” Cleary provided an impressive vocal performance through both songs that were reminiscent of the legendary Dr. John performance that New Mountain Amphitheater hosted this summer.

The pair also covered the Fats Domino hit “I’m Ready,” showing they were willing and able to Rock & Roll all night! Scofield then recollected an old song from his childhood that he explained was once “the #1 song in the world,” a song called “Stardust” which was composed by Hoagy Carmichael in 1927. Scofield lead into it with a beautifully delicate intro to a flowing and relaxing number to bring us all down nice and easy.

John Scofield and Jon Cleary continue their tour tonight in Durham, NC, and after a few other shows throughout the mid-Atlantic and Northeast they will make their way back down south to Atlanta on 12/9 and Charlotte on 12/11.

Open doors, open arms – Asheville Belly dancers and Resonant Rogues raise money for United Nations Refugee Fund

Under her coin scarf and veil, Asheville belly dancer Claire Dima harbors a passion for humanitarian aid.

“The more I heard about the crisis in Syria and Iraq, the more I was convinced I needed to act,” says Dima, who graduated UNC Asheville in 2001 with a degree in history. “The UN has 25% of the funds they need in order to relocate and house people, and I wanted to help.”

Resonant RoguesHer plan? Team up with local band The Resonant Rogues and fill New Mountain Asheville. Together, the team raised over $400 dollars for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.

“We’re artists,” Dima says. “We don’t have any money – but we can put on a hell of a show. We do what we can to help.”

Sparrow, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist for The Resonant Rogues, says she saw the crisis firsthand in France and England.

“It was before the crisis was really on the news,” Sparrow says. “We were coming out of the underground train and we saw all these people running from police.”

Dima says she felt compelled to intervene after the latest Russian bombing campaign. Russian missiles launched into Syria have landed as far away from their targets as Iraq, according to the associated press. The refugee crisis occurring now is the largest diaspora since World War II.

“No matter who you are,” Dima says, “you don’t deserve to have your house bombed.”

Dima says she learned more than international politics at UNCA – she also developed her skills as a belly dancer from the UNCA Belly Dance club. She credits reference librarian Nancy Hayes, the faculty advisor of the club, for her passion for belly dance. The club volunteered tonight at the performance.

“We’re here to help,” says student-volunteer Hannah Capps. “But Claire Dima is really the driving force behind this event.”

Sparrow says the crisis in Europe may seem far away, but we have to remember the displaced people everywhere, whether they be across the ocean or in our backyard.

“In our own communities there are displaced people as well,” Sparrow says. “Everyday people are on the street because they have run out of money, or because they’ve been kicked out of their homes for their beliefs. It’s our responsibility to the community to help these people”

Cory A. Thompson edits The Asheville Current, a local literary news magazine printed once every couple months. Cory studies Anthropology and Mass Communication at UNC Asheville and is expected to graduate this December.

Phutureprimitive is bringing his “dripping wet love drops of nasty mind-melting sonic bliss” to the New Mountain Theater on Wednesday, October 14, all the way from the Bay Area.

Producer and songwriter Rain will put you under his spell with his intricate melodies and rhythms, creating a lush atmosphere of sound. Lucky for Asheville, Phutureprimitive just dropped his latest full-length, “Seaching for Beauty in the Darkest Places, Part Two,” just in time for the show at New Mountain.

Bass Physics will also take the stage with their genre-bending electronic beats. The duo — A.P. Adair and Luke Sims — have one, sole mission, “to spread positive vibes through the power of music.”

Asheville producer Live Animals opens up the show with an early set at 8:30 p.m. Josh Stone explores new soundscapes and expanding the consciousness of sound. Between his West-coast hip hop influences and his entanglements in modern bass music, Live Animals creates his own space on the map of the electronic dance music scene, fusing melody and harmony to create pure sonic force.

Music will start at 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 14. Tickets are $15 in advance and will be available at the door for $18.

ABOUT PATRICK LOPEZ EXPERIENCE
Tremendous musicality, versatility and the ability to entertain everyone from the casual listener to the most discriminating improvised music aficionados.  These qualities have become the trademark of South Florida musician and entertainer Patrick Lopez.  With performances that captivate and inspire his audiences, it’s obvious that he knows where music has been, where music is going, and perhaps most importantly, he’s not going to leave anyone behind on the journey. Patrick will be joined by musicians performing piano, conga drums, saxophone, trumpet and vocals.

ABOUT CUBAN CUISINE & BEVERAGES
We chose the most classic of all Cuban dishes and drinks. Inspired by our grandmother Georgina Pardinas Alonso born in Havana, Cuba in 1906, these are family recipes are the foundation for Lex 18’s Chef Kaufmann’s interpretation. Most “Cubanos” will agree nothing compliments a classic dish better than black beans and white rice. Our recipe for black beans calls for them to be slow cooked for a day with bay leaves, cumin, oregano salt, pepper and olive oil. This specific rice and beans dish, ‘Moros y Christianos’ is a reference to the Spanish Reconquista war that Christian Spaniards fought to throw off the oppression of the Ottoman Moorish occupation of Spain. The dish mixes the rice and beans together – a nod to the fact that 500 years of Muslim occupation of Spain had immersed both cultures together. The Havana Pork tenderloin is our abuela’s traditional recipe incorporating ingredients to keep the lean pork tender and delicious; freshly squeezed limes and oranges, garlic, olive oil, salt, cumin, pepper and oregano while roasted with red bell peppers and onions under the meat.     These two dishes are served with sautéed plantains – a sweet and savory delight.   The finale is Cuban Flan de Leche which begins and ends with the caramel (the sugar that is heated slowly over a steady flre until it reaches the perfect amber hue and taste). What is not to love about a dessert made with whole milk, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla bean, vanilla extract, evaporated milk, lemon peel and eggs; simple, traditional and creamy delicious.

ABOUT LEX 18
LEX 18 is proud to be part of Asheville’s prohibition era history. Between 1904 – 1922, Lex 18 was called Eureka Saloon and frequently visited by Asheville’s Thomas Wolfe’s father W.O. Wolfe. In his famous book Look Homeward Angel, Wolfe mentions Eureka Saloon. Still owned by the same Irish family, The O’Donnells – Asheville’s original speakeasy is now operated as Lex 18 by Georgia Malki, her husband Alan Grau and brother Joseph Malki. The history and stories revolving around Lex 18 have helped revive a craze for classic and nouveau prohibition recipes incorporating Appalachian moonshine, fresh fruits, bitters and elixirs. Our fresh and local cuisine is a modern version of Southern Appalachian fine dinner fare served at the fancier restaurants of the 1920’s. Our kitchen is led by Daniel Kaufmann from New Orleans.
