Keep the Blue Ridge Parkway Open!

Keep The Blue Ridge Parkway Open

Where would Asheville be without the Blue Ridge Parkway? Of course, the answer is that it would be exactly where it is now. You can’t magically move an entire city, vortex or no vortex. But that’s not the point, is it?

Cold Weather and the Parkway

parkway-winter

The parkway during cold weather brings many changes from ice to snow to just plain cold rain. Each of these changes is unique in the mountain range because each one brings a new perspective the wilderness. While the majority of the trees are bare for late fall and winter, there are still areas where different shades of green and yellow appear. One such area is the lookout near Highway 191 exit. This lookout overlooks the French Broad River which is a magnificent river that runs by and through parts of Asheville. Even on a cold rainy day, looking out on the river is a peaceful experience. On one side of this overlook is the river and the other side is a wall of rock spotted with green and yellow-green brush that will remain there all winter long. Soon, as the weather gets colder, this wall of rock will fill up with ice streaming downward from the top to the bottom. That is in itself a pretty site especially when the sun comes out making the ice sparkle and dance! Don’t let the cold weather stop you from exploring the parkway areas that are open for access. This late fall and …

A Cloudy Day

cloudy-day-blue-ridge-parkway

While the sun is great, driving the parkway on a cloudy day is very interesting because the clouds
provide a canopy of new colors and sounds. The mist of soft rain falling presents a melody of sounds
that we normally do not hear on a sunny day. The canopy of trees that the drive goes under in a mist
of rain and clouds darkens the hues of greens, golds and reds this time of year. The air is cooler on a
cloudy day in fall setting the tone for a peaceful ride along the parkway. As always during the fall, the
leaves are beginning to drop to the ground softly and the ones remaining are starting to gain more color
as peak season slowly approaches the Asheville area of the parkway.

Fall on the Parkway

Picture is from Overview next to the turn off into Mount Mitchell State Park.

The days are getting shorter and the nights cooler. Some local areas in Asheville have leaves that are beginning to turn color reflecting the beauty of fall that is here. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a great place to be this time of year. The lush green is turning to gold and some trees have orange and red leaves, but the peak of color is not yet here. It is coming to our area and each day brings more fall color to our landscape.
