Halloween on Vermont Avenue; A West Asheville Tradition

Neighbors in West Asheville are banding together to assemble the 3rd closing of the popular street for children and families who gather for Trick or Treating this Halloween. Vermont Avenue will be barricaded and manned by volunteers to assure safety and convenience for the trick or treaters and residents. Candy donations are also being gathered at local businesses and through online donations to supplement the houses who are hit the hardest by the thousands of children who arrive.

Connect Enka Stresses Importance of Greenways and Trails

Connect Enka, an advocacy group formed to assist in the implementation of the Hominy Creek Greenway Priority Corridor, is partnering with New Belgium Brewing and Fletcher Partners to host an event on Thursday August 20, 2015 at 6 p.m. at the New Belgium Brewing Distribution Center at 144 Jacob Holm Way to demonstrate how a trail system can benefit local businesses and drive economic development.

Zombie Tube-Ocalypse Float Is Back for 2015

Braiiiinnnnssssss! And by that we mean rivers, beer, food and one giant fundraiser! Last year, following Portland, Oregon in the quest for the most interlinked tubers on the river, hundreds of people participated in the first ever Asheville Zombie Tube-Ocalypse! After a wildly successful first year turnout, the Tube-Ocalypse Zombie Float and World Record Attempt is back for a second year! This time it is a shorter float, in hotter weather and with colder beer! This year, the float will start at French Broad River Park and take out at The Salvage Station, located at 468 Riverside Dr. in Asheville, NC.

4TH ANNUAL “RUN FOR SHINDIG ON THE GREEN” 5K RACE AND FUN WALK

The Folk Heritage Committee, which produces Shindig on the Green, is excited to announce the fourth annual Run For Shindig on the Green, a fun and healthy way to help support Shindig, featuring a 5K Race and one mile Fun Walk/Run. The event takes place Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Carrier Park in Asheville with the 5K Race beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the Fun Walk beginning at 8:35 a.m. The Run for Shindig on the Green 5K kicks off the 49th season of Shindig and is a key element in securing necessary funding for the free and beloved Shindig on the Green summer Saturday evenings in Asheville.

Brewing For Greenways

Highland Brewing Company and New Belgium Brewing have created the first collaboration connector beer to support Friends of Connect Buncombe (FOCB), a non-profit supporting the development of a greenway network across Buncombe County. Highland Brewing will host the first Brewing for Greenways event and inaugural tapping of a connector beer, Footpath Belgian Session Ale, on Friday, June 26, 4:00-9:00 p.m. at Highland’s taproom, 12 Old Charlotte Hwy, Asheville, NC 28803.

Penland Creek Accepted As Name Of Creek In East West Asheville

Asheville can add one more name to its map. RiverLink is proud to announce that the name "Penland Creek," has been accepted for a stream in Westwood Place, a neighborhood in East West Asheville bounded by Haywood Road, Craven Street, I-26 and Patton Avenue. Penland Creek was chosen after months of community input and voting, representing a nod toward Johnny Penland and his father, Grover Penland, who began Penland's Auctions in the late 1950s on what is now the New Belgium site. The famous auction house was active until 2013.
