Join Brother Wolf Animal Rescue and other animal lovers on Saturday April 7th from noon-3pm at the Asheville Outlets on Brevard Road for our second annual Kitten Shower!

This fun, family-friendly event will help Brother Wolf prepare for kitten season, which will bring hundreds of cute, cuddly — and expensive! — kittens into their care. Last year alone, Brother Wolf rescued and found loving homes for over 1,300 kittens, with each kitten averaging $200 in supplies, spay/neuter, and other medical costs.

Visitors will enjoy a raffle with fun prizes, delicious cupcakes, kitten bottle feeding demonstrations, and — of course — the opportunity to play with adoptable cats and kittens!

Preparing for kitten season is an integral part of sustain a true No-Kill community. ‘Kitten season’ is a term used by animal rescuers to describe the warm part of the year when cat and kitten intakes drastically increase around the country due to the breeding habits of outdoor unaltered cats.

“We used to be very reactive to kitten season,” says Audrey Lodato, Brother Wolf’s Director of Animal Care, “but we are better prepared now to take proactive measures to help care for pregnant or nursing moms and orphaned kittens, who are some of the most vulnerable animals in our community.

“We have staff and volunteers out in the field every day, responding to calls about cats and orphaned kittens in need,” says Audrey. “Our foster team also hosts regular classes to train volunteers who are interested in fostering kittens, including those who require bottle feeding.”a

The Kitten Shower will serve as a drop-off location for monetary and kitten supply donations, such as wet and dry kitten food, non-clumping cat litter, kitten formula, kitchen scales, and bottle feeding kits. Visitors will also be invited to get involved with caring for kittens through Brother Wolf’s foster and volunteer programs.

For more information about this event, fostering, volunteering, or donating, visit www.bwar.org.

Social media superstars, serial entrepreneurs, and world-famous animal advocates The Vegan Bros will be playing with puppies and drinking brews at Sanctuary Brewing Company’s (SBC) annual Puppy Bowl on Sunday, February 4th,  all to benefit Brother Wolf Animal Rescue (BWAR) and Sweet Bear Rescue Farm. The famous duo will be flying in from LA to emcee the popular annual event, where puppies play football in an epic showdown of cuddly cuteness.

Phil and Matt Letten boast tens of thousands of social media followers and have been featured on Fox, CBS, NBC, ABC, Vice, NPR and all of the other major media networks for their totally unique and undeniably powerful approach to social change and activism. The two are about to launch a new company, and have a book coming out this year via the world’s largest publisher, Penguin Random House.

“We are beyond excited to have the Vegan Bros host the Puppy Bowl!” says SBC co-founder Lisa McDonald. “We love their message and approach to animal advocacy, With puppies, beer, and the Bros, it’s gonna be such a phenomenal day!”

Now in its third year, the Puppy Bowl is a massively popular event at the Hendersonville, NC, brewery. Each year, dozens of adoptable puppies hit the field for adorable antics. This year’s lineup includes Team Tuff and Team Gruff, with all players available for rescue from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue.

Attendees will be asked for a $5 cash donation at the door, and the event will kick off at 2 p.m. Funds raised will benefit BWAR and Sweet Bear Rescue Farm, the new 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by SBC owners Lisa McDonald and Joe Dinan. The farm is home to 17 animals including best friends Ollie the pot bellied pig and Charlotte the chicken; Maggie and Shadow, two newly rescued goats; Oskar the cat; dogs Harry and TT and numerous other furry/feathered inhabitants.

SBC has also raised thousands of dollars for charitable causes since its opening in 2015, offers free Sunday meals for anyone in need, and has a Kindness Wall outside the main entrance that’s always stocked with essentials bags for the local homeless population. Recently featured in Thrive and Our State magazines, Sanctuary has even garnered the attention of big names like comedian Ricky Gervais, racecar driver Leilani Munter, and filmmaker Kip Anderson.

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, located in Asheville, was founded in 2007 to provide the resources and life-saving programs to build No-Kill communities. As a grassroots organization, Brother Wolf operates an adoption center that is open to the public — making it easy to adopt, volunteer, and become involved in our No-Kill mission. In 2018, Brother Wolf will be opening a Sanctuary in Leicester, NC as a resource of learning and healing for all.

Hendersonville, NC, is now home to its very own animal sanctuary: Sweet Bear Rescue Farm. The non-profit is the culmination of a dream by Lisa McDonald and Joe Dinan, passionate animal activists and owners of nearby Sanctuary Brewing Company.

The two quit the corporate world with the goal of starting a brewery and a sanctuary, all with the overall mission of saving both animals and humans — and extending kindness, compassion, and love at every opportunity.

Sanctuary Brewing Company, located in downtown Hendersonville, NC, just celebrated its two year anniversary. Since its launch, the brewery’s proceeds have been funding the farm — a three-acre haven for rescued animals — which sits just two miles from the brewery.

The farm is home to 12 animals with a constant revolving door of foster pets, most recently including a dog rescued from Hurricane Irma. Permanent residents include Ollie the pot-bellied pig and Charlotte the chicken (who are best friends); Oskar the cat; dogs Harry and TT; and numerous other chickens and other furry/feathered inhabitants. There are currently fundraising efforts and volunteer days to help ready their barn and property for two goats and two tom turkeys.

“This is something Joe and I have been dreaming about for years,” says McDonald. “We believe in the inherent value of all life, and we want to save every animal we possibly can. This is an essential piece of our life’s mission to be kind to all living beings, and Sweet Bear Rescue Farm is a place where all animals will be safe and loved for their entire lives.”

Dubbed Sweet Bear after McDonald and Dinan’s late dog, Nala, who inspired their work in animal advocacy, the rescue just received its 501-3 status, so all donations are tax-deductible. The farm will also host regular volunteer work days in order to help keep the property in top shape for the residents.

Sanctuary Brewing Company has raised thousands of dollars for charitable causes since its opening, offers free Sunday meals for anyone in need, and has a Kindness Wall outside the main entrance that’s always stocked with essentials bags for the local homeless population. Recently featured in Paste, Thrive and Our State magazines, Sanctuary has even garnered the attention of big names like comedian Ricky Gervais, racecar driver Leilani Münter, and filmmaker Kip Anderson.

Ongoing events at the brewery include Saturday morning Yoga with Cats, adoptable pet nights, Puppy Bowl festivities on Super Bowl Sunday (to be hosted in 2018 by the world-famous Vegan Bros), Taco and Trivia Tuesdays, karaoke parties, and regular fundraisers for local charities including Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, Farm Sanctuary, and Full Circle Farm Sanctuary, among others.

A plethora of potbellied pigs at the Brother Wolf Animal Rescue Sanctuary are seeking foster or forever homes.

Brother Wolf currently has over 20 potbellied pigs in its care after rescuing a large group abandoned at a cemetery in Tennessee. Since several of the female pigs were pregnant, Brother Wolf has supervised the births of several litters of piglets.

All pigs adopted from BWAR will be up-to-date on vaccines and spayed or neutered.

Denise Bitz, President of Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, spends a lot of time with the pigs at the organization’s sanctuary property in Leicester. “Pigs may not be the right pet for every family, but you would be surprised what great companions they make! Pigs are super intelligent, funny, charismatic little creatures and they make great indoor/outdoor pets,” she said.

Potbellied pigs are highly intelligent. Housebreaking and harness training comes very easy to pigs. Pigs have a great memory and respond well to commands. Potbellies enjoy petting and affection. They are sensitive creatures that can be playful and even almost humorous.

Potbellied pigs live an average of 12-18 years. Twenty-five percent of a pig’s total diet should consist of vegetables (limit starchy vegetables); fruit should only be offered in very small quantities since it is high in natural sugars. Potbellied pigs require a fenced in outdoor area for curious rooting, regular exercise and safe sleeping.

To learn more about incorporating a potbellied pig into your family, email Bitz at denise@bwar.org.

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue recently purchased a new van with funding from the Petco Foundation.

The Petco Foundation awarded Brother Wolf a $25,000 grant. With those funds, Brother Wolf purchased a 2016 Ram ProMaster 2500 HI Roof LWB van.

Already in use, the van assists Brother Wolf with: the transportation of animals to shelters in the North, local veterinary appointments and area adoption events; field operations; Trap-Vaccinate-Neuter-Return initiatives; and the delivery of donated animal food to its five chapters.

“We are extremely grateful to the Petco Foundation. This will help us continue and expand upon the life-saving work we undertake on a daily basis,” said Brother Wolf’s Grant Writer Sally Newman.

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue greatly appreciates the support of the Petco Foundation.

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, located in Asheville, NC, was founded in 2007 to provide the resources and life-saving programs to build a No-Kill community. As a grassroots organization, Brother Wolf believes strongly in community engagement and making it easy to adopt, volunteer and become involved in its No-Kill mission. BWAR’s No Kill Community Development Initiative is currently working with five chapters to implement life-saving programs and build their own No-Kill communities. Celebrating 10 years, Brother Wolf will break ground in 2017 at its sanctuary location 25 minutes from Asheville. The sanctuary will be a place for people and animals to heal, as well as focus on working towards the vision of uncompromised compassion for all animals.
