Just weeks after returning from their Hurricane Florence rescue efforts, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue has begun work to help animals affected by Hurricane Michael, currently descending upon the Florida’s Gulf Coast.

“We’re working with shelters along the Florida panhandle to move adoptable animals to safety at shelters in Rhode Island and New York,” says Brother Wolf’s Director of Animal Care, Audrey Lodato. “By emptying those shelters, we’re helping to create room for animals who will be found in the field during and after the hurricane, with the hope of reuniting them with their families.”

Brother Wolf’s Rapid Response team is also preparing to deploy to Florida to assist with animal care and search and rescue efforts. “Our Rapid Response program provides rescue, support, and resources to animals in urgent, life-threatening situations,” Field Operations Manager, Eric Phelps, explains. “It’s common for our team to find animals left behind when their caretakers were forced to evacuate, cats on rooftops or in trees, or dogs tied to outdoor structures with no way to escape rising flood waters.”

“Unfortunately, as a result of climate change, we are seeing more and more of these powerful natural disasters. And according to scientific predictions, this is the new normal” says Denise Bitz, Founder and President of Brother Wolf. “It is sobering that this kind of disaster work is now routine for us. One of the reasons Brother Wolf advocates for folks to transition to a plant-based diet is that it is the most effective way for individuals to help mitigate climate change.”

Brother Wolf recently provided care and rescue to approximately 250 animals affected by Hurricane Florence in eastern North Carolina.

Disaster relief is some of the most expensive work Brother Wolf does and they wouldn’t be able to save at-risk animals without community support. If you’re able please visit www.bwar.org/rapidresponse to make a monetary donation. Supplies such as wet and dry dog food, wet and dry cat food, cat litter, and airline crates may also be dropped off at Brother Wolf’s Adoption Center located at 31 Glendale Avenue in Asheville.

The joy and excitement that your dog spread in your home through her unconditional love, naughtiness and by being playful, makes her the most important part of your family. You can’t imagine a day without her waiting to welcome you at the door when you are back from work after a long day. So, it’s really important that your furry friend stays healthy, fit and happy. Pests and parasites are a major threat to the health of your dog as well as to your family.

Pests tend to thrive in places that are warm and humid. Your dogs have a higher chance of pest infestation when they go outside for a walk or to play during the warm summer seasons. Pests like fleas and ticks usually stay hidden on tall grass and when your dog comes in contact with the grass the ticks and fleas could enter her body. Mosquitoes, ants, bees, and wasps are some of the other pests that attack your pets including dogs causing a number of health issues.

Besides redness, severe itching and rashes, pests like ticks and fleas are responsible for more serious diseases like anemia, Lyme disease, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. All these conditions are pretty serious, which require prompt medical treatment to prevent fatal situations. The different products at https://pet-lock.com/products/ can treat ticks, fleas, and other pests and can prevent them from spreading further. What are some of the things to keep in mind while trying to protect your dog against pests?

Do not use a pest repellent for humans to treat your dog

If mosquitoes are a problem and you are worried about your dog getting infected by heartworms the best way to stop it is by seeking the advice of a veterinarian to get specific medicines for your dog. Make sure that you do not use a mosquito repellent for humans on your dog as the chemical substance called DEET used in most of the insect sprays made for humans is very harmful to pets and could even poison them. Some of the chemicals could also cause respiratory issues in your dog if the fumes are inhaled accidentally.

Use the correct dosage to treat your dog

Using spot-on medication is one of the most effective ways of treating fleas and ticks on your dog. This medication removes these pests quickly when you use the correct amount of medicine prescribed. However, if you give a dose higher than what is prescribed thinking that the cure would be better, your dog could be poisoned or even killed. Dividing the prescribed dose to make it last longer would fail to cure your dog.

Don’t treat your dog using medication for humans

Most of the medications for humans tend to be toxic to dogs and other pets. Using a skin cream to relieve your dog’s skin irritation and itching could poison your pet as they tend to lick their fur. Avoid treating your canine friend using medicines for humans unless your vet says so.

Treat pest infestation promptly

Once you notice the presence of ticks or fleas in your pet, make sure you take remedial measures quickly. It would be a mistake if you fail to do it hoping that the colder seasons would get rid of it. Pests tend to breed and spread quickly and it would take a longer time to remove it completely.

Don’t ignore signs of illness

Sometimes, the presence of certain bacteria and ticks may go unnoticed but unless treated they could lead to serious health issues. You need to keep an eye on your dog for pests and if you notice any sign of illness you need to take her to the vet immediately.

Don’t forget to treat your pet’s habitat and the surroundings of your home

Treating just your pets to get rid of fleas, ticks and other pests would be a mistake. You need to treat the entire home as well as the surroundings to get rid of pests completely.

Pest control medication for dogs and cats are different

Make sure you use pest control medicines that are specific for dogs to treat them. Medication for dogs and cats vary as they are two different species. Using a cat’s medication to treat dogs and vice-versa could be poisonous to these animals.

Giving the right vaccinations and medications, and grooming your pet on a regular basis can prevent ticks, lice, fleas and other pests from causing serious health disorders. It is the best way to keep your dog safe.

Pet lovers are always on the scout for the best advice on keeping their best friends healthy and happy. While today there is a plethora of tasty treats you can buy for your pet’s specific health needs, nothing beats the discipline of everyday care and grooming of your pet.

Your dog’s coat, in particular, is greatly affected by their diet and general care. In fact, vets globally treat a lack-luster coat as a sign of an underlying health problem. This could be anything from a nutrition deficiency to a bacterial infection to a malfunctioning thyroid gland.

So here are 6 ways to care for your pet’s coat and keep it soft and shining.

Pay attention to a dull and/or dry coat

First and foremost, be attentive to a dull and dry coat, which is usually indicative of a nutritional deficiency caused by poor diet, for which your vet may prescribe a nutritional supplement besides suggesting changes in daily meals.

Dullness and dryness can also be caused by the chemicals in pet shampoos and other pet care products. Check if you’re recently switched to a new product, which may be causing the issue. Other causes of your pet’s coat losing its shine and bounce are fleas and infections, and immediate medical help must be sought for these.

Switch to a healthier, wholesome diet

Most pet problems have a nutritional deficiency at their root. By introducing nutrient-rich foods to your pet’s daily meals, you can improve their internal health easily and effectively, which will show in their coat, temperament and general behavior.

Add fish (sardines, tuna, salmon) and Omega-3-fortified eggs to your pet’s diet; add a spoonful of sunflower oil to each meal; use flaxseed oil (mixed in food) often; and feed them healthy natural foods such as coconut (or coconut oil) for great results.

To fulfil protein requirements naturally, give your growing pet turkey and chicken.

Explore health supplements for proper nutrition

For those strapped for time, there are of course solutions that can help you bolster your pet’s health in a convenient and effective way. Health supplements for pets are all the rage nowadays, and not without reason. They are enriched with essential nutrients and are available as tasty treats that can be fed to your pet without fuss.

Tom Wisnewski from Vet IQ says that the right health supplements for your dog can prevent unnecessary vet visits.

A little extra in your pet’s daily diet can go a long way in managing their health with minimum effort. If you buy only quality wellness supplements enriched with vitamins, proteins and Omega 3 fatty acids—and you will see results in a short time.

Maintain proper hygiene but don’t overdo it

Just as applying too much soap leaves human skin dry and scaly, shampooing your pet’s coat too frequently will do more harm than good as the chemicals will rob their coat of natural moisture and skin oils, leaving it dull and dry.

Give your pet a bath once in 15-20 days with only a hypoallergenic shampoo that’s gentle on the skin. Follow this with a generous application of almond oil, olive oil, coconut oil or any other skin-nourishing oil. This will keep your dear friend’s coat soft and supple.

Another alternative to bathing your dog is to give them a spa either at the salon or right at home. Use a quality essential oil for best results.

Don’t be wary of the vet

While we tend to self-medicate for a number of minor health problems, it’s best to avoid doing this for your pet. If you notice itchy or scaly skin or any other sign of trouble, visit the vet as soon as possible. Delaying proper treatment will only make the condition worse and increase your pet’s suffering.

Aside from SOS visits to the doctor, regular check-ups must be incorporated into pet care, regardless of the present health of your little friend. This will ensure that your pet’s getting regularly screened for any skin infections. Additionally, each visit will give you an opportunity to get sage advice on nutrition, diet and other important information regarding your pet’s wellbeing.

Protect your pet from extreme temperatures

Whatever the weather, your pet must have adequate protection from extreme hot and cold weather conditions. Give them proper shelter and bedding both outside and inside the house, use weather-appropriate clothing, and apply sunscreen when going out in the harsh sun. Basically, do all that you would do to protect a young child from the elements.

Operating a pet store can be incredibly profitable. But just as with all other business, it requires detailed planning and dedication on your part. If you set up a pet store at a good enough location, market it very well, and provide excellent service, you can actually do pretty well in this field. Below, we provide six tips that can help you set up and run a pet store better.

Decide Your Niche

Every business needs a clear-cut vision of its niche. So does a pet store. You need to decide what pets you will be focusing on. Will you be catering only to dogs or cats? Or will you cater to both? Will you also be selling items aimed at rabbits, parrots, hamsters, and so on? Ask yourself these questions and you will arrive at a clear-cut answer as to which pets you will cater to in your store. And as a beginner, it is recommended that you only focus on a few pets that people generally have in their homes, like cats and dogs. Setting up a shop catering to all kinds of pets can become incredibly complex and financially taxing. Offering a focused service is the key to success.

Determine The Layout Of The Store

You will also need to determine the layout of the shop. Once the customer enters your store, they should be able to navigate the space with ease. If the sore is too small, then the customers will find it tough to move around the various shelves, which will give them a bad experience of the store. This can eventually dissuade people from coming to your pet shop since they find it too uncomfortable. So, talk with your interior designer and instruct them to make sure that the entire store is easily navigable even for an old person.

Provide Training To Employees

The quality of the employees will have a big effect on how much business your store generates. If the employees are knowledgeable and pleasant in their dealings, the customers will be delighted enough that they will come back to the store. In contrast, if the employees are confused when the customer asks any doubts and they mostly behave in an irresponsible, arrogant manner, then you will end up losing tons of customers. So, ensure that you only select employees who can talk in a friendly manner and that all of them are provided full knowledge of each and every product in the store.

Get Into Partnerships With Local Vets

You should also consider partnering with local vets for mutual benefits. Check out the local yellow pages and create a list of vets near your area. Contact them one by one and set up an agreement where they will refer their clients to your pet store. In return, you can agree to direct any customer looking for a good vet to them. This is a win-win situation for both parties. And once in a while, you can conduct free pet checkups in association with the vet at your store to give a boost to your business.

Offer Grooming Services

Most pet stores only focus on selling products. But you should not limit yourself to sales alone. Expand your business and look into other opportunities to profit from. An excellent choice will be to start offering grooming services to dogs. If the regular customers see that you are offering a dog grooming service, then they are likely to come to you when they want to groom their pet dogs. Make sure to use high quality-products when grooming the pets. For example, if you are removing flea and other pests from a dog, then use a quality product from https://pet-action.com/ rather than a cheap one. This will provide the best results, which will ensure that you get repeat business from customers.

Associate With A Local Animal Shelter

There are many animals that roam the street, living in harsh conditions without any owner. Fortunately, animal shelters do find some of them and provide comfort. You can associate with any local animal shelter and advertise their animals in your store. Just take some pictures of dogs, cats, and other animals, and post it in the store together with the contact details of the shelter. By doing so, customers will start perceiving your shop as being a ‘socially responsible’ one since you are helping poor animals find an owner. And consequently, these customers are more likely to come to your pet store again because of the good identity you have created.

Keeping Those Fleas and Ticks Away – Essential Pet Care http://ashevilleblog.com/keeping-fleas-ticks-away-essential-pet-care/ http://ashevilleblog.com/keeping-fleas-ticks-away-essential-pet-care/#respond Thu, 03 May 2018 15:01:45 +0000 http://ashevilleblog.com/?p=11640 Our beloved pets are an integral part of the family. Our beloved pets are an integral part of the family. Taking care of your favorite four-legged buddy is a big responsibility and we need to be able to see the sign if something is not right. Keeping a pet dog or kitty in the home involves a lot of grooming. Sometimes though, our pets can catch a flea infestation, which kept unchecked can lead to many problems.

How do Pets Get Fleas and Ticks?

Why do fleas love dogs and cats so much? The nice fluffy fur that we love about our pets also provides the best habitat for these jumpy tiny insect parasites. The danger of fleas is that they live on the blood of the host animal. If your pet is interacting with another infected animal, fleas can easily jump from one colony to a brand new one – your dog or cat. So keeping them away from flea carriers is the best way to prevent an infestation. But that is easier said than done, and once in a while fleas do pop up on your pet’s body.

Ticks are another common parasite that lives off other animals. Just like fleas, they too get transmitted from carriers. Other insects that can be of major inconvenience to your pets include mosquitoes, biting flies and lice.

Dangers of Parasite Infestations

Fleas and ticks can cause your pet a lot of misery. As they start digging into your pet’s skin to suck blood, there will be a lot of itching and irritation. Sometimes pets can scratch themselves so hard that the skin gets wounded or damaged, leading to other infections.

A flea infestation can lead to tapeworms in your pet’s system. Tapeworms can live inside a flea and get transferred to the host animal. These can grow up to 12 inches long living inside the pet and they can cause many health complications.

Young animals which get flea infections are susceptible to flea anemia, a condition where their red blood cell count decreases. This can be fatal if not treated immediately.

If you are living in areas where the climate is warm then you have to watch out for fleas all year round. Most parts of the USA see flea infestation cases spike in the summer. However, even when the weather turns cool post-summer, fleas can make their way indoors and thrive. Therefore keeping the pet home clean and pest-free is very important.

You should also not forget that insects that cause your animals discomfort can also be a hazard to the human inhabitants. There are many diseases that humans can get from fleas and ticks.

Constant Grooming Helps

Dogs and cats with thicker furs are more susceptible to a parasite infestation so regular grooming is very important. Regular brushing is important as it massages the skin below the fur to release essential oils that keep the fur healthy. The longer the fur of your pet, the more brushing is required. It also keeps your pet clean and reduces the chance of a flea or tick infestation. Pet shampoos are specially formulated for your whiskered friend. They are milder than human shampoos and are recommended for pet baths.

You should also keep the pet’s bedding clean along with the rugs and carpets in the house.

Ways to Combat a Flea or Tick Infection

You must be very careful when choosing a chemical solution to get rid of the fleas and ticks. Keep in mind that most solutions are like mild insecticides that can also affect the sensitive skin and fur of your pet. At that time, this product can help to choose an effective way to solve the problem quickly.

Flea and tick solutions come in different forms and you can choose one depending on how your pet would react to it. Shampoos are a popular format for delivering a flea and tick removal method. There are also formulas that are topical, you need to apply them on affected areas once a month (or as prescribed by the vet). Sprays are a convenient way of treating a flea or tick problem, especially with animals who struggle a lot when getting a bath.

As a prevention method, you can also use sprays in the surroundings where your pet lives and plays. There are products for indoor use as well as those meant for outdoor spaces like your yard or garden. These formulas prevent fleas, ticks and other pests to form a habitat in the spaces which your dog or cat loves to explore.

If you are a dog lover, you will agree that life becomes so much more exciting when you have a four-legged friend in your home. At the same time, you are faced with certain challenges to keep your special friend fit and healthy. One such challenge is selecting the best food and treats for your dog. It’s a known fact that a complete and balanced diet is essential to ensure proper health and growth of your pet. But choosing healthy dog food and treats is easier said than done, especially if you are new to the task. Here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting healthy dog food and treats.

Consider your dog’s age

The nutritional requirement of dogs changes with their age. It is important that you feed your dog healthy food and treats that are formulated for his age. For instance, a puppy will need food or treats that are rich in protein. This will help them to develop their growing muscles and attain strength. But for a grown-up dog, you will have to look for food that matches his activity level. Also, you need to make sure that the food or treats you are offering will help to ensure a healthy weight for your pet. After all, you don’t want your dog to become obese and inactive due to inappropriate food.

Keep your dog’s activity level in mind

Dogs belonging to different breeds have different activity levels. Some dogs may be more active than the others of their own breed. As such, you need to think about your dog’s activity level when selecting food or treats for him. Does your dog indulge in regular activities that help him to burn more calories? Or, an occasional walk is the only exercise your pet gets throughout the week? If you have a highly active dog as your pet, you need to go for food and treats that are rich in nutrients. Such food will help them to get the energy to keep up their activity level without feeling fatigued. On the other hand, for a dog with a less active lifestyle, you may opt for dog food designed to maintain proper weight.

Prioritize nutrition but do not forget the taste

The right food can ensure a long and quality life for your dog. So, you need to give utmost importance to the nutrition contained in your dog food. But, like human beings, your dog also loves to indulge in tasty food. So, you need to maintain a balance between the two. Having a nutritious food that does not appeal to your dog’s taste buds is not a great idea. Your dog may even avoid eating the food if he does not like the taste at all. That is why you need to look for food and treats that are great for health and good in taste as well. You can check out the food and treats from Betsy Farms if you are looking for the perfect blend of nutrition and taste.

Think about food allergy

Food allergy can result in much discomfort in your pet, including itchy skin and dog hair shedding. If your dog suffers from any kind of food allergy, look for food items that won’t trigger the allergy in your pet. Most new pet owners can’t even recognize the food items or ingredients in food that causes allergy to their dogs. When you are in such a position, the best idea is to consult your veterinarian and seek advice about the same. Your veterinarian will be able to identify the ingredients that can trigger the allergy in your dog. Once you know which ingredients are to avoid, pick out food and treats that do not include them in their ingredient list.

Ensure that the food is easily digestible

Improper digestion can cause much discomfort for your dog and can even affect his health adversely. If you find that a particular dog food results in flatulence or your pet does not defecate properly after having it, then it’s time to change the food. You can know that the food is easily digestible if your dog maintains his pooping schedule and defecates properly. Also, your dog must not show any symptoms of discomfort or stomach ache after eating the food. Homemade food may seem to be a good solution for this problem. But such food may not contain all the nutrients required for the wellness of your dog. So, it’s better to opt for a nutrient-rich and easily digestible dog food.

Preparing for kitten season is an integral part of sustain a true No-Kill community. ‘Kitten season’ is a term used by animal rescuers to describe the warm part of the year when cat and kitten intakes drastically increase around the country due to the breeding habits of outdoor unaltered cats.

“We used to be very reactive to kitten season,” says Audrey Lodato, Brother Wolf’s Director of Animal Care, “but we are better prepared now to take proactive measures to help care for pregnant or nursing moms and orphaned kittens, who are some of the most vulnerable animals in our community.

“We have staff and volunteers out in the field every day, responding to calls about cats and orphaned kittens in need,” says Audrey. “Our foster team also hosts regular classes to train volunteers who are interested in fostering kittens, including those who require bottle feeding.”a

The Kitten Shower will serve as a drop-off location for monetary and kitten supply donations, such as wet and dry kitten food, non-clumping cat litter, kitten formula, kitchen scales, and bottle feeding kits. Visitors will also be invited to get involved with caring for kittens through Brother Wolf’s foster and volunteer programs.
