Local Nonprofit Reaches 10,000 People in 12 months, Capping Biggest Year Ever

The POP Project’s “10 for 10” book giving campaign was a complete success.

Local nonprofit The POP Project reached 10,000 people across Western North Carolina and into other states in 2019 through their “10 for 10” book giving campaign. The campaign celebrated POP’s tenth year of operations by delivering more than 10,000 free books wherever there were needs.

“The recipients were nearly anyone and any place you could think of—school children, veterans, jails, families, people seeking housing, children’s programs, healthcare centers, food pantries, and Little Free Libraries,” said Executive Director Jim MacKenzie. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate turning ten than having a record-breaking year of giving.”

Throughout the year, volunteers sorted, packed, and delivered thousands of books.

“We really can’t thank all of our volunteers and staff enough. Without their hard work, our year would never have been so successful,” said MacKenzie.

The POP Project’s literacy-based mission focuses on improving community members’ access to books. Since 2009, the volunteer-led nonprofit has delivered more than $285,000 worth of free books into the community. In 2019 alone, POP delivered 10,088 books totaling $50,440 in value to 84 locations in Buncombe and surrounding counties, as well as other states. POP’s previous best year on record totaled 7,009 books delivered.

“We really pushed ourselves and the effort paid off,” said Sarah Giavedoni, Director of Donations and Volunteers. “By focusing on our mission and utilizing our volunteer teams, we were able to meet a really ambitious goal. Not only was 2019 POP’s biggest year for book deliveries yet, but we beat our own records by double-digit and triple-digit percentages!”

POP is looking forward to the next ten years.

“No doubt, POP made a significant impact to our community during 2019, but we still have a long way to go before everyone in WNC has sufficient access to books,” said Giavedoni. “We want to keep expanding our donation base, programs, and volunteer opportunities for the coming year, and we need help doing it.”
