Overheard in Asheville: Sears Leaving Asheville Mall

The rumor mill is alive and well, this time targeting the Asheville Mall. The mall on Tunnel Road is reported to be undergoing some extensive renovations in the near future, much to the delight of local shoppers. Until this year, Asheville Mall has not experienced any competition, but with the opening of the new Asheville Outlets May 2nd, the CBL owned property may be feeling pressured to step up their game.

Recently, popular local blog Ashevegas reported that Sears at the Asheville Mall may be closing, to be potentially replaced by a restaurant and movie theater. We are happy to report that this is not true. Sears Holding owns both Sears and Kmart stores, and the company shuts down low performing stores with soon to be or expired leases first. In the past few years, two Kmart locations that historically have under performed were closed to make way for new stores. One location on Tunnel Road was shut down, revitalized, and is now the popular Whole Foods and Tunnel Road Tap Haus. The second Kmart location in South Asheville will be opening April 29th as the site of Western North Carolina’s first Publix.

Some quick calls to corporate and the Sears store reveal that this Asheville Mall anchor will not be leaving in the near future. Sorry movie goers, Sears will be not turning into a multiplex any time soon.
