Symptoms of an overactive bladder


Let’s start by identifying the symptoms of an overactive bladder.


For starters, you may feel like you have a sudden urge to urinate and have difficulty controlling it. This often tends to happen at inopportune times and you may find yourself struggling to contain the urge. You may also feel an unintentional loss of urine. This is often referred to as urgency incontinence and could lead to an embarrassing situation if it isn’t handled properly. Lastly, you may also wake up several times in the night just to urinate.


Some people find that urinating frequently can also be a sign that you have an overactive bladder. However, this isn’t always a confirmed symptom of an overactive bladder. For example, you may have just drunk a lot of water and tea, so your body needs to urinate more often. However, if you do urinate more than 8 times while you’re awake and you haven’t changed your liquid consumption, then it could be a symptom worth looking into.


It’s unclear what exactly causes an overactive bladder. It can be caused by excessive consumption of alcohol and caffeine, but it can also be the result of certain medications. As such, it’s worth speaking to a healthcare expert if you’re concerned about your overactive bladder.


Should you see a doctor?


An overactive bladder isn’t exactly uncommon, especially in older adults. However, it’s not a normal part of ageing and should be something you discuss with your doctor, especially if it’s a recent development. If it’s causing you distress and leading to some embarrassing situations in life, then it’s worth dealing with the problem and looking into solutions.


For example, your doctor may explain how to use urinary catheters and consider it an option to help with your overactive bladder. Other solutions may include maintaining a healthy weight and diet to help improve your body’s functions. In some cases, your doctor may relate your overactive bladder to chronic conditions such as diabetes.


There are also exercises you can do to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles via Kegel exercises. This can help treat an overactive bladder, but it’s something that you need to speak to your doctor about first before you decide to try.
