No Pets Left Behind Adoption Event August 20th, 2016

This Saturday, August 20, is International Homeless Animals' Day and Asheville Humane Society is hosting their first "No Pets Left Behind" adoption event with a goal of clearing WNC shelters. Regional shelter and rescue organizations were invited to participate by reducing their adoption fees, and Blue Ridge Humane Society, Foothills Humane Society, Macon County Animal Services, Madison County Animal Services and Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation joined the effort. (Adoption fee discounts vary at each location – please refer to each organization's website for details, address, hours, etc.) Asheville Humane Society is offering fee-waived adoptions for all pets in their Adoption Center at 14 Forever Friend Lane.

Petco Foundation Invests In Lifesaving Work of Asheville Humane Society

Asheville Humane Society announced they have been awarded a $60,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support their spay/neuter and behavior programming. There will be a check presentation at Petco on Brevard Road this Friday, May 6 at 10:00 AM.

AHS Granted Custody of Shih-Poos from Cruelty Case

On March 24, four Asheville Humane Society employees assisted Asheville Animal Services in liberating 55 frightened, under-socialized, urine-burned, and feces-matted Shih Tzu/Poodle mixes from a home in North Asheville. After being granted custody last week, Asheville Humane Society has announced an "Oodles of Shih-Poodles" adoption event on April 30 from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm and the first 37 dogs will be available on a first-come-first-served basis. Adoption fees for the Shih-Poos will be $100 on Saturday. In celebration of "National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day," all other animals in Asheville Humane Society's Adoption Center will have their adoption fees waived for the day.

Paw it Forward: Pets Helping Pets Campaign

Asheville Humane Society is launching the Paw it Forward Campaign presented by Dog Tag Art to benefit the homeless animals of Buncombe County. AHS' first large-scale crowdfunding campaign will run from April 15 to June 15 with the goal of raising $60,000. Paw it Forward is not your typical peer-to-peer fundraising campaign—pet-to-person is more accurate, as campaigners will ask for donations in the "voice" of their pet.

Asheville Humane Society: Project Yellow

"Project Yellow is a wonderful education campaign for dogs in our community," said Katy Mahaley, Behavior Department Coordinator at Asheville Humane Society. "I see many dogs who are a little shy or just need extra space, and owners struggle with communicating that to people who love dogs and want to interact. A simple yellow ribbon takes the pressure off of the owner and gently asks the public to give the dog the space they need to remain confident and feel safe."

Sanctuary Brewing Company Opens Their Doors

Sanctuary Brewing Company officially opened their doors Saturday, August 22nd at 1 pm. Owners Joe Dinan and Lisa McDonald were ecstatic to share their hard work with friends and family this past weekend. Only the second brewery to open in Hendersonville, Sanctuary has 15 beers and one cider currently on tap. In addition to beer, the brewery offers craft soda from Virgil's and Boylan, as well as small range of vegan friendly foods from Roots Hummus, No Evil Foods, and Edible Musings.

Asheville Humane Society kicks off its Project Pit Bull Awareness and Action Campaign on June 19 at 6:30 p.m. with a community forum. Deirdre Franklin, founder of Pinups for Pitbulls, owner of Darlings Asheville and author of Little Darling’s Pinups for Pitbulls will lead the discussion, “What is BSL and Can It Keep Us Safe?” The forum is the first of the campaign's free services for pit bull owners, community resources, and other events.
