Cold Weather and the Parkway

The parkway during cold weather brings many changes from ice to snow to just plain cold rain. Each of these changes is unique in the mountain range because each one brings a new perspective the wilderness. While the majority of the trees are bare for late fall and winter, there are still areas where different shades of green and yellow appear. One such area is the lookout near Highway 191 exit. This lookout overlooks the French Broad River which is a magnificent river that runs by and through parts of Asheville. Even on a cold rainy day, looking out on the river is a peaceful experience. On one side of this overlook is the river and the other side is a wall of rock spotted with green and yellow-green brush that will remain there all winter long. Soon, as the weather gets colder, this wall of rock will fill up with ice streaming downward from the top to the bottom. Day 35: Bringing out the artist in me.

i was heading east again, to the cute little town of black mountain. all ready to walk the downtown streets and find this new cafe called the artisan. as i approached the town, i typed the address into my navigation system and was slightly confused when it showed me a route that led through downtown and then south a little bit. i had no idea that i'd be outside of black mountain. and i didn't understand how (or why) a new little cafe existed off of one of the windy country roads. but, i listen to my navigator's voice and headed south.... but, i got lost. or i did't get lost, actually. what happened was that i ended up circling back around on some back road which spit me out in the middle of downtown black mountain again.

Fall on the Parkway

The days are getting shorter and the nights cooler. Some local areas in Asheville have leaves that are beginning to turn color reflecting the beauty of fall that is here. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a great place to be this time of year. The lush green is turning to gold and some trees have orange and red leaves, but the peak of color is not yet here. It is coming to our area and each day brings more fall color to our landscape.
