I had the delightful occasion to dine a few weeks ago at Kathmandu, in downtown Asheville, North Carolina. I am a bit partial to exotic flavors and tastes, and adventurous. Apart from an unpleasant experience with some freshly caught undercooked grilled octopus in Cozumel, my escapades in finding new and delicious off-the-beaten path items has been quite exciting indeed.

As I mentioned previously in my review of Hole, found here on AshevilleBlog.com, I am a big fan of boutique doughnut shops and grew up in an area with a wide selection of them. This has not been an area where Asheville has excelled, but a burgeoning local industry and doughnuts and a dearth of well-written reviews has prompted me to drag myself out into the frosty Halloween morning to sample the wares of two brand new establishments in Asheville.

I am a transplant to Asheville; yes, I own it. I love Asheville's food scene, but one thing it has never done well until now is boutique style doughnuts. Tired of the same old same old chains like Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme, I have avoided trying to get a good doughnut in Asheville for a long time. This morning I decided to give a third perspective on the two newcomers to Asheville doughnuts: Hole and Vortex Doughnuts (read my review on Vortex here). As new establishments, they both get a little wiggle room in my opinion for working new bugs out of their preparation and customer service experience.

From the plains of Springfield, Missouri, this indie rock band made their Asheville debut at The Grey Eagle in the River Arts District. Ha Ha Tonka is a collective of four extremely talented young men playing soulful Ozark Mountain music with a mixture of college rock. The name Ha Ha Tonka is a nod to the boys Ozark pride, as Ha Ha Tonka is a state park in southwestern Missouri. When we caught up with them to record this session before their show at The Grey Eagle, we were instantly captivated by how harmoniously these guys worked together. It was almost effortless on their part, and it made the filming all that more natural.
