Social media superstars, serial entrepreneurs, and world-famous animal advocates The Vegan Bros will be playing with puppies and drinking brews at Sanctuary Brewing Company’s (SBC) annual Puppy Bowl on Sunday, February 4th,  all to benefit Brother Wolf Animal Rescue (BWAR) and Sweet Bear Rescue Farm. The famous duo will be flying in from LA to emcee the popular annual event, where puppies play football in an epic showdown of cuddly cuteness.

Phil and Matt Letten boast tens of thousands of social media followers and have been featured on Fox, CBS, NBC, ABC, Vice, NPR and all of the other major media networks for their totally unique and undeniably powerful approach to social change and activism. The two are about to launch a new company, and have a book coming out this year via the world’s largest publisher, Penguin Random House.

“We are beyond excited to have the Vegan Bros host the Puppy Bowl!” says SBC co-founder Lisa McDonald. “We love their message and approach to animal advocacy, With puppies, beer, and the Bros, it’s gonna be such a phenomenal day!”

Now in its third year, the Puppy Bowl is a massively popular event at the Hendersonville, NC, brewery. Each year, dozens of adoptable puppies hit the field for adorable antics. This year’s lineup includes Team Tuff and Team Gruff, with all players available for rescue from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue.

Attendees will be asked for a $5 cash donation at the door, and the event will kick off at 2 p.m. Funds raised will benefit BWAR and Sweet Bear Rescue Farm, the new 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by SBC owners Lisa McDonald and Joe Dinan. The farm is home to 17 animals including best friends Ollie the pot bellied pig and Charlotte the chicken; Maggie and Shadow, two newly rescued goats; Oskar the cat; dogs Harry and TT and numerous other furry/feathered inhabitants.

SBC has also raised thousands of dollars for charitable causes since its opening in 2015, offers free Sunday meals for anyone in need, and has a Kindness Wall outside the main entrance that’s always stocked with essentials bags for the local homeless population. Recently featured in Thrive and Our State magazines, Sanctuary has even garnered the attention of big names like comedian Ricky Gervais, racecar driver Leilani Munter, and filmmaker Kip Anderson.

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, located in Asheville, was founded in 2007 to provide the resources and life-saving programs to build No-Kill communities. As a grassroots organization, Brother Wolf operates an adoption center that is open to the public — making it easy to adopt, volunteer, and become involved in our No-Kill mission. In 2018, Brother Wolf will be opening a Sanctuary in Leicester, NC as a resource of learning and healing for all.

In Hendersonville, Rich and Linda Wenger are gearing up to open a new brewery.  Construction is nearing completion on Basic Brewery, a taproom that aims to “serve Western North Carolina’s best local beer and [their] own delicious handmade beers.”

Through the lens of today’s cultural associations, the name may not strike you at first, but other definitions include “fundamental” and “essential.” Basic Brewery wants to be that staple pub by offering the best ales from the smaller breweries around the area not normally found at your average taproom or restaurant starting mid-February.  Their intention is to begin brewing their own recipes within a few months.

The Wengers previously helped found and operate Dark Corner Distillery in Greenville, SC, where Rich designed and built the brewing and distillation system.  He also crafted the recipe for their award winning moonshine.  I asked them what type of brews they would be primarily making, they said they both enjoy “peppery beers,” using hot peppers and other infusions.

Basic Brewery is still awaiting their brewing system, which will be shipped in from Portland, OR later this year.  They will be operating on a 1.5 barrel brewing system, giving them the freedom to experiment with unique and compelling infusions.  All of the beer will be available in their taproom alongside their guest taps.

The location itself has some history of fermentation as well.  131 Third Ave, unit W previously housed Falderal Winery, which closed in February of 2014.  Now, almost exactly 2 years later, Basic Brewery hopes to bring the location back to life.

Stay tuned to Basic Brewery’s Facebook Page for updates!

Sanctuary Brewing Company officially opened their doors Saturday, August 22nd at 1 pm. Owners Joe Dinan and Lisa McDonald were ecstatic to share their hard work with friends and family this past weekend. Only the second brewery to open in Hendersonville, Sanctuary has 15 beers and one cider currently on tap. In addition to beer, the brewery offers craft soda from Virgil’s and Boylan, as well as small range of vegan friendly foods from Roots Hummus, No Evil Foods, and Edible Musings.

Dedicated to supporting animals, Sanctuary Brewing will be kicking things off by working with Asheville Humane Society, Blue Ridge Humane Society, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue, and Full Circle Farm Sanctuary. As a part of their business model, Sanctuary is committed to enriching the lives of animals by working with local advocates to promote their well being. Not only is their business model unique in the craft beer industry, but Sanctuary is breaking the mold as being the first 100% vegan brewery in North Carolina.

After successfully using Kickstarter and GoFundMe to raise over $20,000 to offset a portion of renovation expenses, Sanctuary welcomes consumers into their nano brewery. The building they currently occupy offers a total of 5,000 square feet of space, but Dinan and McDonald chose to open 2,000 square feet of the brewery and will continue to renovate the remaining space as they serve beer and food to eager customers. There is plenty of seating for customers and their pets, including a lounge area with adirondack chairs in front of a garage door.

You can check out Sanctuary for yourself and participate in their Grand Opening celebration, taking place Friday August 28th, starting at 7 pm. There will be raffles, prizes, adoptable puppies, local food, and a range of drinks including beer, wine, and cider. Local musician Emily Bodley will be performing live.

Sanctuary Brewing Company is located at 147 First Avenue East in Hendersonville, NC.
