Highland Brewing Company Introduces New King MacAlpin Double IPA

Warrior Series at Highland

Last night Highland Brewing Co. had their Pre-Release for the first beer of their Warrior Series, a line of bold, high gravity beers. There are going to be several new beers launched under this line four times a year and released in limited quantities. The newest Head Brewer at Highland is Hollie Stephenson, and her beer is kicking off this series with the 10% ABV King MacAlpin Double IPA. Hollie, originally from the East, previously worked for Stone Brewing Co. in Californian. She said the thing she had been missing from California was the West Coast IPAs. No need anymore because she created what she calls a “bitter, balanced, 10% beer with a big, big lemon peel, tropical hop aroma and flavor.” Being an IPA-lover, I was elated to get a taste of this beautifully blended beer, and I was impressed. I picked up on pineapple aromas, and loved that she hadn’t used as much of the more typical grapefruit flavor, which gave this Double IPA a unique and memorable flavor.

asheville beer week

It's been a pleasantly exhausting ABW to this point. After the opening fest-focused weekend, the past few days have centered on many smaller tasting events and beer dinners, culminating in last night's Goose Island specialty beers tapping (2013 Lolita, 2014 Bourbon County Brand Barleywine, The Illinois) at Appalachian Vintner (745 S. Biltmore) and the Not So Big BIG Beer Fest at Thirsty Monk's future brewery location near Biltmore Village (92 Thompson St.), where that line-up even included the prized Westbrook Mexican Cake. But, with a few days left to go, I offer these few additional picks:

Asheville Girl’s Pint Out

Girls Pint Out Asheville

As a female craft beer lover I often feel, well…outnumbered. Most beer events and bars and breweries are dominated by men: male drinkers, male brewers, and male employees. It’s been a man’s world for quite some time, but thankfully in the last few years there has been a huge shift. Women consume around 30% of the craft beer on the market and there are more and more women brewers entering the scene, including quite a few in our own city. Women’s organizations like The Pink Boots Society and Girls Pint Out have helped to pave the way for women in beer. Girls Pint Out is a national non-profit organization that brings together women who love craft beer, want to learn about craft beer, or work within the craft beer industry.
