Highland Brewing Company Introduces New King MacAlpin Double IPA

Warrior Series at Highland

Last night Highland Brewing Co. had their Pre-Release for the first beer of their Warrior Series, a line of bold, high gravity beers. There are going to be several new beers launched under this line four times a year and released in limited quantities. The newest Head Brewer at Highland is Hollie Stephenson, and her beer is kicking off this series with the 10% ABV King MacAlpin Double IPA. Hollie, originally from the East, previously worked for Stone Brewing Co. in Californian. She said the thing she had been missing from California was the West Coast IPAs. No need anymore because she created what she calls a “bitter, balanced, 10% beer with a big, big lemon peel, tropical hop aroma and flavor.” Being an IPA-lover, I was elated to get a taste of this beautifully blended beer, and I was impressed. I picked up on pineapple aromas, and loved that she hadn’t used as much of the more typical grapefruit flavor, which gave this Double IPA a unique and memorable flavor.

Highland Brewing’s New Seasonal Beer Lost Cove Coming Soon

Lost Cove

Get lost this summer with Lost Cove American Pale Ale, a new seasonal beer from Highland Brewing coming in May. Rising temperatures in the South are the perfect setting for this delicately nuanced brew. Lost Cove’s pilsner malt imparts a light body with low bitterness and 4.5% alcohol by volume, accented by the fruit aromas of Cascade hops and the mild fruit and spice accents of Hallertau, a German noble hop. Head Brewer Hollie Stephenson said, “Lost Cove is a thirst quenching, fun, light, sessionable beer with grassy German hops and citrusy American hops. This beer is interesting, its backbone is pilsner malt from the American Midwest, and we fermented it with our house ale yeast, creating a unique spin on an American pale. I’m looking forward to drinking one in the Meadow!”

What do you do with an Ol’ timey band born in the 80’s?

You enjoy them! Tar and Rosin has an energy like I haven’t seen in a band for awhile. These folks have wisdom and cadence in their playing that makes you want to get rowdy! With a fiddle, banjo, gee-tar, and wash board, along with collaborations, Tar and Rosin will get your body moving as you order another local brew. Based out of Des Moines, IA at the moment, this mutlicultural band loves Asheville so much, they’re thinking about moving here! If you love a fast string sound, with the passion of a unionist from the 30’s, check out Tar and Rosin. The name of their CD says You Can’t Get There From Here, but if you’re listening while drinking whiskey, you will get there, and you’ll enjoy every minute. They played at a variety of venues around town, including the Westville pub and Highland Brewing Company, while they were here. The band is in Eastern North Carolina right now. They’re headed on up the east coast, but I’ll put money on them coming back here as soon as they can. Just some words of warning: Don’t invite them back to stay the night at your place, and DO NOT call …
