Cold Weather and the Parkway

The parkway during cold weather brings many changes from ice to snow to just plain cold rain. Each of these changes is unique in the mountain range because each one brings a new perspective the wilderness. While the majority of the trees are bare for late fall and winter, there are still areas where different shades of green and yellow appear. One such area is the lookout near Highway 191 exit. This lookout overlooks the French Broad River which is a magnificent river that runs by and through parts of Asheville. Even on a cold rainy day, looking out on the river is a peaceful experience. On one side of this overlook is the river and the other side is a wall of rock spotted with green and yellow-green brush that will remain there all winter long. Soon, as the weather gets colder, this wall of rock will fill up with ice streaming downward from the top to the bottom. That is in itself a pretty site especially when the sun comes out making the ice sparkle and dance! Don’t let the cold weather stop you from exploring the parkway areas that are open for access.
