The Perfect Vacation (or Staycation) in Asheville

Asheville is a beautiful city known for its liberal approach to things, its embrace of LGBTQ residents and tourists, arts and crafts, Art Deco architecture, cozy bed and breakfasts, excellent hotels, craft beers, and farm-to-table eateries. In 2017, Asheville was named by Lonely Planet as the number one travel destination in theUS. It is easy to see why Asheville is beloved by tourists and locals alike.

Whether you plan to visit Asheville for the first time, or you’ve been a longtime resident and want to rediscover some of the city’s best, make sure to include these in your list of things to do:

Shop

It’s not Miami or Beverly Hills, but Asheville also boasts a good shopping scene. The city is home to some of the most unique shops in the US, such as Asheville Bee Charmer, Desirant, Bruisin’ Ales, We So Honey Vintage, and Porter & Prince, which could easily give Pottery Barn a run for their money. You can also choose to explore exquisite jewelry shops that feature astounding works of art.

Read

If you love to read, Asheville has tons of libraries and quaint bookstores that you will love. Some of the bookstores here have regular book drives and events that you can join while you are there. While visiting Asheville, it would be wise to read books about the history of Asheville, as there are tons of exciting stories about this beautiful city.

Energize

If you are the outdoorsy type of person, bring your family to the North Carolina Arboretum. It boasts numerous hiking trails and is a great space for your whole family to enjoy. The garden has a bonsai collection, stream garden, and a holly garden. It also features a tree collection of Meta Sequoias, which are said to be the tallest in the south. The arboretum and botanical garden are open daily.

Brew

If you are a huge fan of craft beer, you’ve come to the right place. The city is home to some of the best craft breweries in the country — 50 of them, to be precise. In fact, there are regular events that celebrate food, life, and brewery in Asheville. One of the highly attended brewery festivals in Asheville is the Annual Burnpile Harvest Fest. It attracts tons of tourists from Dallas, Boulder, Vista, and Greenville. When attending festivals like this, make sure you stay safe. Most personal injury lawyer Dallas claims that events like these are common places for injury as most attendees become intoxicated. Asheville is also home to three national craft brewers, namely New Belgium, Sierra Nevada, and Oskar Blues.

Explore

There are tons of places for families to enjoy in Asheville. One is the Folk Art Theatre. This museum heavily features arts and crafts of the Appalachian region. Visiting the River Arts District will bring you to the city’s significant crafts area where you could purchase exotic textiles or pottery. You can even enlist in a quick course at two of the most well-known craft schools in the area. The city also has tons of musical events, most notably during the summer season. Musical events like these have given Asheville a growing reputation of being a regional music center.

Of course, visiting the Biltmore Estate is a must-do on any visitor’s (or resident’s) list. Also known as America’s Largest Home, the Biltmore Estate has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The estate has a self-sustaining home with 250 rooms, and it served as the home of the Vanderbilt family. The majestic house was designed and built by Richard Morris Hunt, and Frederick Law Olmsted designed the formal gardens.

Asheville is a city that will surprise you. A city that will open your eyes to several beautiful sights to see and entertaining things to do. Whether you’re visiting the city for the first time or the thousandth time, there’s always new and fun things to do in Asheville.
