Disc Golf, also known as Frisbee Golf or Frolf, is a sport evolved from an offshoot of one of many games formed by the Frisbee craze. Played much like golf, players use a flying disc and attempt to land their disk inside of a target. Each disc golf course is comprised of a number of holes, and players must try to score in as few throws as possible. Asheville has a variety of disc golf courses that are free to play on, with the number of targets or holes ranging in size from 6-18. A full course is comprised of 18 holes, and these holes can provide a variation of different challenges depending on the setting. For example, the Richmond Hill Disc Golf Course is a hilly, wooded professional level course that is sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association.
Much like golf, a player uses several discs throughout a course. Discs are smaller and heavier than traditional Frisbees, and are divided into three categories: putter, all purpose mid-range, and drivers. Unlike a Frisbee, discs made specifically for disc golf are created to fly with a curve, and different discs with varying amount of weight and curve can be purchased so that a player can best pick which disc to throw depending on the scenario. Frisbee Golf Discs can be purchased at various retailers around town, including Diamond Brand Outdoors.
Disc golf is a great way to enjoy the Asheville landscape, and makes a great singular or group activity. Courses are free to play on, so it is a free activity after the initial purchasing of the discs. The courses in Asheville are open year round, making this an all weather activity for those that are brave enough to play in the middle of summer or dead of winter.
