Celebrity Sighting: Artimus Pyle

There was a celebrity spotted hanging around in the West Asheville/Enka/Candler area end of town the other day. This famous figure is well known for always having a pair of sticks in hand - but it appears he may be trading in his money makers for some knitting needles. Artemis Pyle, the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd was at Western North Carolina's largest yarn store yesterday, yarn in hand.

Goodbye Biltmore Square Mall

Today marks the official close of the Biltmore Square Mall. Although this mall always seemed out of place in Asheville, it was a beautiful structure that many are sad to see go, despite the fact that the mall has been dead for quite some time. The mall, originally built in 1989 has floundered since its conception due to a number of reasons including poor planning, infrastructure, high prices, and the direct competition of The Asheville Mall only a few exits away.

The Asheville Annual Yarn Crawl

Every year in May, Asheville’s diverse fiber arts community comes together to adventure through the city and enjoy all that our local yarn stores have to offer. This year was no exception, as we were treated to an even broader variety of shops, spanning all corners of the county, as we took part in the annual Asheville Yarn Crawl. In all, nine stores participated in this year’s crawl, each offering special promotions, raffles, and surprise giveaways. The crawl is held on Mother’s Day weekend, falling on May 10th, 11th, and 12th this year. There is no charge to participate in the yarn crawl, and each participant is entitled to one free raffle ticket from each shop they visit. Participants in the yarn crawl are encouraged to try to visit all the shops on the crawl, in order to be entered into a grand prize drawing. My ultimate goal was to visit all nine stores in one day…and so I set off on my quest. The first shop I visited was The Yarn Nook (1261 Smoky Park Highway, Candler NC).
