Cave music trio Moon Hooch is coming to Asheville, and they promise to play a show you won’t forget.
Members Wenzl McGowen, Mike Wilburm and James Muschler have been playing as Moon Hooch for about five years now.
The Brooklyn-based trio rose to popularity in a very Asheville way; they started out busking in the New York City subway, but not as a band. Moon Hooch actually got started after competing against one another.
“Wenzl and I were playing in the street and Mike was playing with other people and one day we were busking separately — Wenzl and I and Mike and another drummer — and we happened to be at the same location and we started playing together,” Muschler reminisced.
The rest is history.
Listening to MH’s music, it’s easy to hear something is delightfully unique about their sound. Muschler says it’s the human aesthetic, but it could be the traffic cone.
“Wentzl sometimes puts a traffic cone in the bell of his saxophone to make the pitch lower,” Muschler said matter-of-factly.”
It’s something the horn player has been doing since he was a kid, Muschler says. “15 years later and I guess he’s still doing it.”
Moon Hooch has a big 2016 coming up; they will be touring on and off until May, then an album in June.
They’ve been holed up for the beginning of the year rehearsing and perfecting their sound and accumulating the energy needed for touring this spring.
Muschler says the band makes music with “the energy you can only kind of create with improvisation.”
That being said, if you’re coming to their show, expect a fun Tuesday night. “It’s always very energetic. There’s a lot of dancing and sweat.”
