CAT FLY RETURNS FOR THIRD ANNUAL FILM FESTIVAL

Cat Fly Indie Film Fest is taking over Asheville, returning for its 3rd annual spring festival March 29-31. The three day event will include over 25 short films, 1 feature film spotlight as well as educational components and mixed media collaborations by local and regional filmmakers and performers of the southeast. Opening Night kicks off with a red carpet reception at the Asheville Masonic Temple and a screening of traditional narrative and documentary short films. The event is black tie optional and the reception includes craft beer provided by Wicked Weed Brewing, as well as wine, champagne and gourmet bites all included with your ticket. Immediately following is a 2nd block of programming called Cat Fly After Dark: a Collaboration of Film and Music at the Mothlight which will showcase live performances and serve as the premiere of “Disco Paw,” a 5 part music video series.  “Cat Fly does a great job of bringing together several different creative mediums (music, visual arts, etc.) to create an all-encompassing experience…. which push the boundaries on what a traditional film festival might include.” says graphic designer Emma Ensley. Area Nonprofits Join Forces for Earth Month as ‘WNC for the Planet’

Local nonprofit organizations, universities, and businesses have teamed up to celebrate Earth Month again this year through a collective effort — WNC for the Planet.  The collective partnership will host a month of environmental service, education opportunities and community events across Western North Carolina.  As part of the effort, WNC for the Planet launched an online community calendar at WNCfortheplanet.org where the public can learn about various events and volunteer days inspired by Earth Day 2019. “Last year WNC for the Planet collective was well received by the community with over 1300 hours and 50 service projects in our region,” says Anna Zanetti, North Carolina Director of Friends of the Smokies. French Broad River Garden Club Annual Plant Sale-April 27th

The following is a press release sent in by the French Broad River Garden Club announcing their 2019 Annual Plant Sale, happening at the end of April  The French Broad River Garden Club Foundation announces its 2019 Annual Plant Sale, held April 27 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.  This springtime tradition is a popular event enjoyed by locals and visitors from our region. It is a good time to speak with the nursery growers of plants, shrubs, and trees so gather your questions and come join the fun. Our “Speakers Event” at 11am will allow visitors to sit inside Clem’s Cabin and take a break from shopping, and be educated by one of the area’s most knowledgeable hands-on farmers. This year’s speaker will be Annie Louise Perkinson, of Flying Cloud Farm. Annie Louise will be speaking about how to grow a “cutting garden.” She has had lots of experience with this, as her family farm in Fairview is well known by many. Asheville Humane Society Announces Tracy Elliott’s Departure

Asheville Humane Society announces that their executive director, Tracy Elliott, has resigned from his position, effective February 15. Last month, Elliott informed the organization and its supporters of his planned departure. Personal matters are calling him to be closer to his parents in the Midwest, and Elliott has accepted the position of President at the Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago.

Asheville to Host First Drag Brunch to Support Homeless

Asheville Drag Brunch will host its first Local Celebrity Drag Brunch on Sunday, March 10 at 1 p.m. at Bebette’s Café in Asheville to raise funds for the homeless. One ticket buys brunch which includes coffee, beignets, cheese grits, vegetable egg casserole, sausage, and breakfast potatoes, and also includes the drag show.  Profits from this show benefit the local charity BeLoved Asheville as they help Asheville's homeless people year-round.  Upcoming brunches will benefit additional local charities.  Tickets are on sale now at www.AshevilleDragBrunch.com

Jonas Gerard Art Destroyed At Asheville Airport

Within the span of 24 hours, four pieces of work created by the locally infamous Jonas Gerard has been destroyed. The pieces were displayed at the Asheville Airport. After the destruction of the first two pieces at an undetermined time yesterday, two more pieces were installed as replacements, where they were documented to have been vandalized at some point last night.
