Catawba Brewing to Release PB&J Beer with Three Variations, Black Currant Making Debut

Plus New Mardi Gras Beer Pays Homage to King Cake The legendary “PB&J sandwich in a glass,” Peanut Butter Jelly Time (5.7 percent ABV), makes its annual return to the Catawba menu on March 1 with a weekend release party. The beer starts as a light brown ale with a touch of wheat in its malt bill, providing the bready base for the star ingredients – real raspberry puree and whole roasted North Carolina peanuts. Continuing a new tradition started last year, the release party for Peanut Butter Jelly Time will include three specialty variations of the beer in addition to the original Raspberry: Strawberry-Rhubarb, Blackberry, and the debut of Black Currant. Availability Catawba’s most popular Specialty Series beer since 2012, PB&J will be at all four Catawba tasting rooms and the Palmetto Brewing tasting room in Charleston. The three small batch beers were brewed in Catawba’s Asheville and Charlotte brewhouses and will be sold exclusively in their tasting rooms. A special PB&J flight will be offered while supplies last. Peanut Butter Jelly Time (5.7 percent ABV) makes its eagerly anticipated return on Friday, March 3. A light brown ale with a touch of wheat in its malt bill provides the bready base for the star ingredients. This one-of-a-kind beer was then aged on real whole roasted local WNC peanuts and Oregon raspberries, resulting in the wildly popular “sandwich in a glass.” PB&J will be available on draft and in new 4-pack tallboy cans in all Catawba tasting rooms and in distribution.

Catawba’s PB&J Returns March 3rd 2017

Catawba’s Peanut Butter Jelly Time certainly didn’t take the easy road to its near legendary status among craft beer enthusiasts. This hard-earned liquid lunch is the result of blue-collar brewing – hardhats and bootstraps. Aging beer on whole roasted local WNC peanuts presented a unique challenge in 2012, when Catawba brewed their first 3-barrel batch of PB&J. Five years later and now slated for 4-state distribution, this one-of-a-kind beer has inspired some innovative engineering and a proprietary brewing process.
