Asheville: One Queer City

lgbtq pride

If you are LGBT and/or an ally in Asheville, you are never alone. A local saying goes that, “if you throw a rock in Asheville, you’ll hit a (insert non-normative label here)”. One Google search for LGBT Asheville shows that the stereotype holds true: Asheville is one queer city! Statewide and nationwide groups like Equality NC, HRC, and other well-known LGBT advocates find local chapters to be loud, proud, and diligent. On Facebook and other social networking sites there are several pages for local business listed in the Carolina Purple Pages. There is even an extensive “Gay and Lesbian Travel Guide” section on one of Asheville’s most popular tourist websites. But aside from the internet presence of queer folks in Asheville, there is also a wealth of local organizations here for support. Networks, support groups, and volunteer opportunities vary in scope and cover different niches within the community. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list; it is simply an overview of LGBT Asheville. The best way to get involved is to try one or several of these groups and see which ones best fit your wants and needs. Youth OUTright provides a support system for 14-23-year-olds who might not otherwise have …

Asheville High School Marches in Inaugural Parade

Asheville High School Marching Band

Asheville High School’s marching band was chosen to march in the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Parade, representing the state of North Carolina. The band was only started in competitions six years ago after the current band director Will Talley took the helm. As such a young band, it is an extreme honor to be selected as one of 90 groups out of the 2,807 original applicants. The band worked hard to raise the $90,000 it cost for this trip, doing a variety of fundraisers including a pre-inaugural support concert, and a 5k. The band embarked to Washington DC on Friday, January 18th, and arrived home on Tuesday, January 22nd. In addition to marching in the parade, the students had the opportunity to enjoy the varying aspects of Washington DC culture and get a tour of the capital, tour museums, attend the Inaugural Gala Awards Ceremony, and top the trip off with a celebratory dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe after the parade. Over the weekend, the band was also honored the title of “Grand Champion”. Way to go, Asheville High Marching Band! Want to see USA Today’s coverage of the event? In the woods with the Wicked

Flight from Wicked Weed

Wicked Weed, Ashevilles’ newest taste topic who had originally intended to open on the 21st, welcomed A-Town to pull up a thirsty stool December 28th, 2012. And bring in the New Year they most certainly did, with 15 specialty craft made brews. Half American, half Belgian style ales, lagers, stouts and sours. The best part is they plan on having more to come throughout the year. I didn’t have a chance to find out what the staple beers were but I did get a taste of 7 delicious ales, all with Wicked Weeds wickedly clever titles: Freak double I.P.A. (8.4%) Dark age burbon stout (10.5%) Transgressor red (7.2%) Vixen cocoa stout (8.8%) Bedeviled golden strong (9.4%) Black angel cherry sour (5.6%) I was concerned at first that two guys from Dogfish Head wouldn’t have the flavor and style to compare to Ashevilles unique scene and culture. But gladly mistaken I was. This beer is on point. The freak double IPA hints at the 60/120 minute IPA but lacks the sweetness, which in my humble opinion, is a good thing. Citrus hops immediately punch me in the face and leave me wanting more right before noticing the subtle sweetness calming me back …
