On Saturday, October 5, 2019, the WNC Nature Center will host their 43rd annual Hey Day fall festival from 10am-4pm. The event includes fun for the whole family: arts and crafts, a scavenger hunt, a hay maze, music, face painting (additional fees apply), and exciting animal programs with furry and feathered ambassadors.

Firestorm Books & Coffee will partner with Asheville Prison Books to celebrate Banned Books Week by holding a book drive for incarcerated readers in North and South Carolina. Community members are encouraged to drop by the West Asheville co-operative on Saturday, September 28 to buy a banned or “challenged” book to donate to Asheville Prison Books. Firestorm will then match every gift with a second donated book. Between 1pm and 5pm, Prison Books volunteers will be on-hand to share additional information about their program

The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation estimates there are more than 1 million people in the United States with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), and more than 60,000 people are diagnosed each year. The main symptoms of the disease are movement related.

“It has been seven years since I’ve been diagnosed with Parkinson’s,” said Linda Sprouse, a participant in the YMCA of Western North Carolina’s Parkinson’s programs. “I was always active, but I listened to my doctor who said exercise, exercise, exercise was the best medicine you can take.”

Firestorm Books & Coffee is excited to announce children’s summer programming taking place at the bookstore from July 6th through August 24th 2019, with an event every Saturday at 10:30am. The programming rotates each week between read alouds and arts and crafts events, all of which are focused on local ecology, using natural materials to make art, recycling and upcycling, and gardening.

Asheville Outlets (ShopAshevilleOutlets.com) will host the Independence Day 5K on Thursday, July 4, 2019 at 8:00 a.m. Participants can choose from the timed 5K run/walk or the 1 mile unlimited walk. Registration pricing, day of or in advance is $30 for adults for the 5K Race and $15 for the 1 mile walk. Special senior and youth pricing available. $5 from every registration will go towards either the Wounded Warrior Project or Veteran for Peace. Come beat the heat (or rain) and shop vintage, antiques, art and handmade from some of the regions best! The market is 9 am - 5 pm on Saturday and 10 am - 4 pm on Sunday. Admission is $5, good for both days and kids (17 and under) are always free. Service dogs only are welcome.
