This Father’s Day weekend, the Better Dads Festival will create an active, soulful, inspirational, fun, and educational space for the Asheville community to explore and celebrate fatherhood. The event welcomes people of all ages. Live music, dance, games, costumes, drumming, storytelling, crafts, poetry, and a dress-your-dad photo booth will provide opportunities to play together. Community speakers and resource booths from Asheville’s diverse communities will invite festivalgoers to explore how men show up in their lives, the challenges they face, and new possibilities.

Malaprop’s Bookstore has announced the Rise Up and Read Together, a year-long program that invites all residents of Asheville to read the same book. Rise Up and Read Together is modeled on the “One City One Book” program, and is designed to build a sense of community and promote literacy. Like “One City One Book,” Asheville’s Rise Up and Read Together takes the idea of a localized book discussion club and expands it to cover an entire community.

The Asheville Fringe Arts Festival will return bigger and better for it's fifteenth year. With over 35 contracted artists and 18 ticketed shows, the bold festival just keeps growing and growing. The 2017 edition will feature some favorite dance/movement based artists from years’ past, including Jenni Cockrell, Lindsey Kelly Dance, Amanda Levesque and Kathy Meyers Leiner.  Puppetry fans will enjoy several shows in the line-up, including a premiere by Keith Shubert, as well as work by artists Broderick Jones, and West of Roan.
