Fast Food Valentine’s Day Meals

Admit it - Valentines Day is overrated. If you are like Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother, maybe you believe Valentines Day was once a long forgotten holiday called Desperation Day. Perhaps are you like some of my friends who believe that Valentines Day is essentially a corporate holiday of greed that companies like Hallmark use to boost sales during slow winter months. Whatever the reason, you are not a fan of this 'lovers holiday'. Why waste all that time planning and agonizing over the perfect gift and making reservations at a fancy restaurants that require both shirts and shoes for service?

Goodbye Biltmore Square Mall

Today marks the official close of the Biltmore Square Mall. Although this mall always seemed out of place in Asheville, it was a beautiful structure that many are sad to see go, despite the fact that the mall has been dead for quite some time. The mall, originally built in 1989 has floundered since its conception due to a number of reasons including poor planning, infrastructure, high prices, and the direct competition of The Asheville Mall only a few exits away.

Big Changes for South Asheville

I used to avoid South Asheville at all cost. After moving to the south side a couple years ago, I have grown very fond and extremely comfortable here. Biltmore Park has grown and flourished into its own little community. Further, inviting big city names to become a part of our town. Dining with Metro favorites such as P.F. Changs and Brixx. Luxury hotel rooms in the Hilton. Education in town, instead of abroad with Western Carolina University. Specialty Shopping with REI and Orvis are here, now.

SURPRISE: Asheville Mall Renovation 2014

We've written pieces before about the Asheville Mall, and despite our misgivings about shopping there during the holiday season, the CBL owned mall is a go to spot for many in the city. However, there have been many changes afoot recently. The popular European fashion store H&M was announced at the end of 2013, with plans of opening sometime in 2014. This writer recently found out that New York & Company, a popular clothing store that sits on the same wing as Old Navy and Sears, is closing at the end of January, along with the popular FYE. Dairy Queen and Subway have also recently left the food court, leaving some to wonder what on earth is happening.

The Asheville Annual Yarn Crawl

Every year in May, Asheville’s diverse fiber arts community comes together to adventure through the city and enjoy all that our local yarn stores have to offer. This year was no exception, as we were treated to an even broader variety of shops, spanning all corners of the county, as we took part in the annual Asheville Yarn Crawl. In all, nine stores participated in this year’s crawl, each offering special promotions, raffles, and surprise giveaways. The crawl is held on Mother’s Day weekend, falling on May 10th, 11th, and 12th this year. There is no charge to participate in the yarn crawl, and each participant is entitled to one free raffle ticket from each shop they visit. Participants in the yarn crawl are encouraged to try to visit all the shops on the crawl, in order to be entered into a grand prize drawing. My ultimate goal was to visit all nine stores in one day…and so I set off on my quest. The first shop I visited was The Yarn Nook (1261 Smoky Park Highway, Candler NC). This was my first visit to The Yarn Nook and I was delighted with what I found inside. There were many …
