As I mentioned previously in my review of Hole, found here on AshevilleBlog.com, I am a big fan of boutique doughnut shops and grew up in an area with a wide selection of them. This has not been an area where Asheville has excelled, but a burgeoning local industry and doughnuts and a dearth of well-written reviews has prompted me to drag myself out into the frosty Halloween morning to sample the wares of two brand new establishments in Asheville.

Waking Life, the popular 5 year old West Asheville Coffee shop has teamed up with a local videographer to give you a visual taste of what goes into each individual cup of coffee brewed at the shop. Waking Life is a Microcafe who is currently bottles their own flash chilled coffee, available at several locations in Asheville, in addition to serving customers in their West Asheville Store. The workers of Waking Life take their coffee very seriously - check out these tidbits from their manifesto:

Biltmore Coffee Company Closing

The Biltmore Coffee Company (Not to be confused with Biltmore Coffee Traders on Hendersonville Road), located at 1 North Pack Square, in the bottom portion of the Biltmore Office Building, is closing doors effective Friday, June 27th. Upon hearing this I gave a little gasp of horror as I not only love their space, but I adore their chai lattes. I did a little digging to find out the cause of closure and what would happen to the building.

it was a beautiful early autumn day and i could feel the pull of downtown. i had nothing at all planned. no idea where i'd get my coffee from, but it needed to be downtown. i don't know why. so, i parked my car and started walking the streets. i just felt good. you know, one of those days when you feel really alive. the sun was warm and shining. the sky was bright blue. the moon still hung in the sky, fading away as the bright day took over. and the leaves were just beginning to get that hint of color on the tips on some trees. everything just felt good. and i walked.

ok. i admit it. my tastes are all over the place. when it comes to coffeehouses and cafes, i like everything. or at least, i like something about everything. i think that's my stubbornly optimistic, idealistic, find-the-positive-in-everything personality. annoying to some, perhaps. but, to me, it's just how i am. i can't change. i don't want to change. and i don't think i even could change.
