This article originally appeared in the Charlotte Observer Attention, North Carolina shoppers: The back-to-school sales tax holiday weekend, around for more than a decade, is ending. This coming weekend, Aug. 2-4, is the final year in North Carolina for the tax holiday, which provides shoppers with discounts on everything from computers to backpacks to clothing. There’s no change to South Carolina’s sales tax holiday, which is also the same weekend. North Carolina’s change comes as part of a major tax reform measure signed into law last week by Gov. Pat McCrory. The tax overhaul includes a provision to eliminate the state’s back-to-school, tax-free weekend beginning in 2014. Also going away next year is the annual tax holiday for Energy Star-rated appliances. North Carolina lawmakers and opponents of the sales tax holiday said the state lost millions on the weekend. North Carolina lost an estimated $13.6 million in tax revenue during last year’s sales tax holiday, according to the N.C. Department of Revenue. But that state revenue loss has been shoppers’ gain. Retailers have been big fans of the tax holiday since it was launched in 2002. For some retailers, the annual event is the second-most profitable weekend of the year …

  www.wildwnc.org Late Tuesday afternoon, we learned that the City of Asheville has proposed to close the WNC Nature Center, along with a number of other city resources and programs, to balance the city budget, which will be short $5.7 million if recent bills introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly are passed. Information on the list of bill names, sponsors, descriptions and considerations about how the bills may impact city residents, can be found on the City’s website, along with the proposed expenditure reductions. The City of Asheville is hard-pressed to find solutions to balance the budget if these bills are passed. In 2011, the Center adopted a new 2020 Vision  that outlines a strategic business plan as well as a site plan for improvements and additions to the Nature Center. This plan includes initiatives to alleviate demands on the City of Asheville budget to operate the Center and to reconfigure the Center into a public/private partnership. The beauty of this plan is that we have already started thanks to our supporters with exhibit updates, corporate sponsorships, and a Wild Vision Society. You enjoy them! Tar and Rosin has an energy like I haven’t seen in a band for awhile. These folks have wisdom and cadence in their playing that makes you want to get rowdy! With a fiddle, banjo, gee-tar, and wash board, along with collaborations, Tar and Rosin will get your body moving as you order another local brew. Based out of Des Moines, IA at the moment, this mutlicultural band loves Asheville so much, they’re thinking about moving here! If you love a fast string sound, with the passion of a unionist from the 30’s, check out Tar and Rosin. The name of their CD says You Can’t Get There From Here, but if you’re listening while drinking whiskey, you will get there, and you’ll enjoy every minute. They played at a variety of venues around town, including the Westville pub and Highland Brewing Company, while they were here. The band is in Eastern North Carolina right now. They’re headed on up the east coast, but I’ll put money on them coming back here as soon as they can. Dawes is an american rock band from Los Angeles, CA has cast aside their post punk sound in favor of folk rock flavor. They are releasing their 3rd album titled Stories Don’t End on April 9th of this year. If you aren’t familiar with the band, Dawes is composed of brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, along with Wylie Gelber and Tay Strathairn. Rolling Stone reports that this much anticipated album was recorded here in Asheville. Recorded in five weeks last September in Asheville, North Carolina, Stories Don’t End features clean production from King (Tom Waits, Norah Jones), who helped the band break out of its vintage mold, though they don’t completely strip away that Laurel Canyon sound. “These are the same four guys that you’ve gotten to know very well on the first two records, but at the same time, this album feels like a growth,” [Taylor] Goldsmith says. The band toured last summer opening for the popular Mumford & Sons as they released their album Babel.

Wicked Weed, Ashevilles’ newest taste topic who had originally intended to open on the 21st, welcomed A-Town to pull up a thirsty stool December 28th, 2012. And bring in the New Year they most certainly did, with 15 specialty craft made brews. Half American, half Belgian style ales, lagers, stouts and sours. The best part is they plan on having more to come throughout the year. I didn’t have a chance to find out what the staple beers were but I did get a taste of 7 delicious ales, all with Wicked Weeds wickedly clever titles: Freak double I.P.A. (8.4%) Dark age burbon stout (10.5%) Transgressor red (7.2%) Vixen cocoa stout (8.8%) Bedeviled golden strong (9.4%) Black angel cherry sour (5.6%) I was concerned at first that two guys from Dogfish Head wouldn’t have the flavor and style to compare to Ashevilles unique scene and culture. But gladly mistaken I was. This beer is on point. The freak double IPA hints at the 60/120 minute IPA but lacks the sweetness, which in my humble opinion, is a good thing. Citrus hops immediately punch me in the face and leave me wanting more right before noticing the subtle sweetness calming me back …
