Asheville's seventh annual Wine and Food Festival had its first phases of its culinary competition on Friday, May 1st, with "Amuse." At this pre-festival event, five chefs and six mixologists were to take an ingredient or two from an amusement park or circus and use it as inspiration to produce bite-sized original dishes. The winners of this competition will go on to compete at the Grand Tasting and Elixir later this summer.

Jeffrey Barcelona is an Asheville native that will be bringing barbecue to the citizens of west Asheville on May 1st. "We've been thinking of doing this for a few years," Barcelona explains, pointing to himself and his wife while sitting in a booth at the quickly progressing Bonfire Barbecue location on Patton Avenue. "We moved to Portland Oregon for a few years, and started up a food truck." Their food truck, which served fried chicken became wildly popular, voted one of the top 10 food trucks in Portland, and appeared on Food Network. Shortly after that, the couple sold the truck and moved back home to Asheville, explaining that it was much easier to start up a business when surrounded by friends and family.

The very first graduating class of the newly established Deb au Nare’s Burlesque Academy of Asheville will be making their stage debut with acts created during the 6 week Burlesque 101 course. The event provides the aspiring burlesque performers a space for them to show off what they have learned in class and encourage others to sign up for future classes. The Burlesque Academy graduation show will be held Tuesday, February 24th at The Mothlight in West Asheville, NC.

“I'd love to see more burlesque performers on the Asheville stages”, said Deb au Nare, founder of Deb au Nare’s Burlesque Academy of Asheville, “there are so many talented and creative individuals in this city that are interested in burlesque but are not sure how to get started. I wanted to provide that needed guidance with the school as well as a place for them to present their art on stage for a supportive audience.”

Deb au Nare’s Burlesque Academy of Asheville will begin another 101 series starting March 1st that will also include the opportunity to debut in front of a live setting. Plans for future classes include a 102 series and various drop-in classes such as chair dance and prop work.

It always makes us feel warm fuzzes inside seeing the city we love top another list. I am a transplant to Asheville; yes, I own it. I love Asheville's food scene, but one thing it has never done well until now is boutique style doughnuts. Tired of the same old same old chains like Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme, I have avoided trying to get a good doughnut in Asheville for a long time. This morning I decided to give a third perspective on the two newcomers to Asheville doughnuts: Hole and Vortex Doughnuts (read my review on Vortex here). As new establishments, they both get a little wiggle room in my opinion for working new bugs out of their preparation and customer service experience.
