New Belgium Brewing will minimize the number of their shuttle trucks traveling Haywood Road in West Asheville, directing outbound shuttle trips traveling from the brewery to their Enka distribution center (DC) to use Riverside Drive north. Inbound shuttle trucks will use Haywood Road, as the turning radius from Riverside Drive onto Craven Street going south does not allow for incoming trucks to use that same route. The brewery is leasing custom trailers that are 12” shorter in height to navigate the railroad trestle bridge on Riverside Drive north of Craven Street, and will continue to use that route as long as it is navigable, or until City roadway improvements get underway in that area. The City of Asheville committed to minor adjustments to the Craven Street and Riverside Drive intersection to enable trucks to navigate the community’s preferred route and help alleviate traffic in that area.

Friday July 17th Rhetorical Factory will be featuring the art of Cindy Kunst of CLicKs Photography. Kunst has been creating photographic art in Asheville for years, both journalistic and abstract. So much of how she uses her camera is inspired by her ability to connect with her subjects; reading the CLicKs website and blog will give you an idea of all the varied events and niches of Asheville culture she is a part of. Just a few years ago Cindy hired Rhetorical Factory to make a screen print for her photography uniform. Bethany Adams, owner and artist of the local shop, took a photo of Cindy’s first camera ever, and made a design. The Clicks uniform shirts are printed at Rhetorical Factory with that camera design and the Clicks logo on second hand clothes that Cindy supplies. The camera print is a part of the Rhetorical Factory original collection as well.

When Adams invited CLicKs to be the featured artist for the store in July the creative wheels started to turn. Kunst was inspired to get her art “off the wall” and came to Rhetorical Factory with the idea for another collaboration: fabric printed with her art, sewn into clothing by Bethany Adams. The two have been developing the idea ever since, and it will culminate with the opening at Rhetorical Factory at 444 Haywood Road in West Asheville Saturday night with refreshments starting at 4pm and music by local guitarist Bryan Steele from six to nine pm. Garments at the showing will be samples, with any of the clothing styles available in any of the featured prints, made-to-order. The walls will bear our collaborative photography surrounding the collection as well as unique glass tile pieces Kunst has designed to complement the collection will also be for sale. You are invited to come get inspired by local art!

Even the Animals blends dusky Americana with softly gritty indie rock, songs in soft focus, close to the microphone and transcending the standard take on contemporary and traditional folk. The songs are lyrically driven with shared harmonies creating a bittersweet atmosphere that is both wistful and cacophonous. Asheville can add one more name to its map. RiverLink is proud to announce that the name "Penland Creek," has been accepted for a stream in Westwood Place, a neighborhood in East West Asheville bounded by Haywood Road, Craven Street, I-26 and Patton Avenue. Penland Creek was chosen after months of community input and voting, representing a nod toward Johnny Penland and his father, Grover Penland, who began Penland's Auctions in the late 1950s on what is now the New Belgium site. The famous auction house was active until 2013.

Last year was my first Asheville Beer Week experience, and this year the only thing that would excite me more than the 9-day 2015 Asheville Beer Week (May 22-30) would be a 31-day Asheville Beer Month! While a full month of May filled with special beer events would put my stamina and “party grampa” (#partygrampa) status to the test, I believe I'd be up for the challenge.
