Meet Ferrari! This beautiful, petite lady came to Asheville Humane Society nursing four kittens - all orange! She and her babies were cared for in a loving foster home until it was time for adoption. Ferrari is shy and timid, and prefers to find a quiet spot to observe the activities going on around her. She enjoys gentle petting and needs a quiet home to come out of her shell. Earning her trust will take a little time, but we know this stunning mama is worth it! Ferrari does like the company of other kitties. All cats and kittens are FEE-WAIVED through August 2nd, to make room for **over 200 kittens** who are currently in foster care. We would love to see Ferrari out of the busy Adoption Center and into a peaceful, forever home! Is this blue-eyed girl the one for you?

Meet Keeper! He is a one and a half year old Vizsla Mix. If we could pick one word to describe this energetic guy, it would be FUN! Keeper is favorite pick for the Humane Society's Hiking Hounds and Urban Tails programs, in which volunteers take adoptable dogs out and about on hikes. He offers the best of both worlds... after an adventurous day of hiking, he would be a sweet boy to enjoy a quiet evening with you. Keeper is very smart and would love a person who would work with him on training, tricks or agility. He already knows sit and down! He even enjoys the company of his other dog “roommates” here in the Adoption Center. Keeper is a fantastic dog who has been with us for quite a while, just because he keeps getting overlooked. Please give him a chance and we know you’ll fall in love!

Dogged

Being dogged is a good thing, at least in the sense I mean it. To me, “dogged” means “having a dog”, and I’ve been dogged for almost all of my almost 74 years.
The first dog was Smoky. He was a black Lab/mystery rescue. I don’t remember much about him, partly because he was only with us a few weeks before running away, partly because I was just a little kid when he was with us. Then we/I had, in order, Lassie, Timmy, Sandy, Arnold, Arthur, Igor, Zelda, Linus, Gonja, Sammy, Casey, Dooley, Nick, Remmy, Missy and Rosie. Preventing and Treating Your Pets’ Protein Allergies

Does your dog chew at his tail or feet? Does your cat have a dry, dull coat (or even bald patches) and always seems to be itchy? Are you constantly at the vet for ear infections or digestive issues? Food allergies or insensitivities may be to blame! While grain allergies are the most common seen in dogs, they can, and often do, develop allergies to specific proteins in their diets. Dogs and cats are not born with allergies to specific proteins; they are developed over time by feeding the same ingredients over and over. If a dog is given chicken every day of his life, for example, over time his body may become less equipped to break down those proteins. The body begins to mistakenly identify chicken as a harmful ingredient, and creates defensive antibodies to fight against the food. This is what causes the symptoms that many of us have become familiar with. It’s important to note that different breeds can be prone to different medical conditions and allergies, whether your pet is a golden retriever or a feline friend.
