Saturday, September 19th is the day that marked a shift in the Asheville community for years to come. When the story about Jared Rutledge and Jacob Owens, owners of the former Waking Life Espresso in West Asheville first broke, it was met with a mix of concern, disdain, outrage, and disgust. Concerned West Asheville citizens organized an impromptu protest on the sidewalk in front of the popular coffeehouse at 4 pm. Normally open until 8 pm, co-owner Jacob closed the doors to the store at 4:10. This was the start of the avalanche that suddenly immersed Asheville in a wave of a culture that few knew about: the red pill, pick up artists, and misogyny.

Chicken Salad Chick Opens First Location in Asheville
Chicken Salad Chick, the nation’s only southern inspired, fast casual chicken salad restaurant concept, announced today its first restaurant in Asheville, N.C., will open on Oct. 27. Located in the Asheville Market Retail Center at 4 South Tunnel Road, the new Chicken Salad Chick is owned and operated by long-time franchisee team Michelle Singleton and Julie Beville of Sing Bev Hospitality, LLC. Tupelo Honey Restaurant Workers Petition For Higher Wages
Employees from Asheville, NC-based Tupelo Honey Cafe have launched a new online campaign on Coworker.org calling on the company to improve wages. The petition, started by Tupelo Honey employees with support from the Asheville Sustainable Restaurant Workforce (ASRW), states that in the past year, Tupelo Honey has cut back on discounts and food for staff while also reducing wages for support staff by over $3 per hour.

Hi-Wire Brewing Announces Plans for Birmingham, AL Location
The brewer’s first Alabama taproom, set to open in late summer, will join Hi-Wire’s roster of soon-to-be ten taprooms. With expansions underway at both its Biltmore Village Production and South Slope Specialty breweries in Asheville, two additional locations are scheduled to open this year – Charlotte, N.C., in the spring and Cincinnati near the end of 2022. Alabama marks the fourth state in which the award-winning brewery will have premises with six facilities in Hi-Wire’s home state of North Carolina along with out-of-state taprooms in Knoxville, Tennessee, Louisville, Kentucky, and soon-to-be Cincinnati, Ohio.
