The first annual Fiber Feel Day was held at the WNC Agricultural Center on June 1^st, 2013. The event featured fleeces, roving, and yarn for sale from many local vendors, as well as spinning, weaving, and felting demonstrations, and a chance to meet local farmers and their fiber animals. Sponsored by Local Cloth, Echo View Fiber Mill, the AFCNA, and WNC Communities, the event was held from 9 am to 1 pm and was free to attend.

it was a beautiful early autumn day and i could feel the pull of downtown. i had nothing at all planned. no idea where i'd get my coffee from, but it needed to be downtown. i don't know why. so, i parked my car and started walking the streets. i just felt good. you know, one of those days when you feel really alive. the sun was warm and shining. the sky was bright blue. the moon still hung in the sky, fading away as the bright day took over. and the leaves were just beginning to get that hint of color on the tips on some trees. everything just felt good. and i walked.

i can't believe it! i am halfway done with my 40 days of fika project! on the one hand, it seems as if it has flown by. on the other, it feels like an eternity since that first visit to waking life. wow. and you know what? it's a little hard to try to put into words all that i have experienced and learned. i'm not sure if i can really even try. i feel like i need to wait until the entire 40 days is complete before i try to process what this project has meant to me.

It was a totally last minute decision to head to Charlotte Street and visit the City Bakery Cafe. It's a fairly popular place for people who live in Asheville, at least I think it is. Though I am not sure where I am getting that information from. In any case, it was another beautiful day and I was just dying to be outside. For some reason, this cafe popped into my mind and I headed to Charlotte Street, hoping they had outdoor seating.

The other day while at work, I struck up a conversation with the man next to me. We were both at McDonald’s letting our children wear themselves out. We were talking about his situation and he said that Asheville is a more expensive place to live than the plains of Texas, which is where he and his family moved from not to long ago. After chatting awhile longer, we realized that we both had something in common, we both are searching for a job in Asheville. He being an educated man, with a four year degree in journalism and I with my extensive years in childcare thought that we would land replacement jobs in no time. However, we both came to the realization that both of our lines of work had limited opportunities in the area. That leaves us with having to apply for jobs outside of our field. We quickly discovered that we are both at a disadvantage, as most job seekers are now days. Most if not all job postings will say, sometimes in capital letters, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. Asheville is a society of movers and shakers, which means that there is a large population of freelancers in the area. The awesome thing about being a freelancer is you are your own boss, you control your job and your destiny. The bad thing about freelancing is that is generally means lack of workspace. Working at home is cool, but when your entire house starts to feel like your office, it is time to mix things up. The last thing any freelancer needs is to constantly feel like you are in 'work' mode, especially in the confines of your own home. It's healthy to be able to separate home life from work life and work from a remote location.
