Highland Brewing Company’s Cold Mountain to Release November 10
Imagine calling a business meeting on a Sunday, in the morning, without serving coffee. Then add instructions: Don’t eat breakfast or drink coffee before arriving, and IF you brush your teeth, make it at least an hour before you arrive. As the group leader, you’d rightly expect attendance to hover near zero. But there is a time and place where everyone shows up. Hungry and uncaffeinated, employees arrive at Highland Brewing Company for one Sunday morning assignment: deciding the flavor profile for this year’s batch of Cold Mountain Winter Ale.

Highland Brewing Company’s Thunderstruck Coffee Porter hits shelves in October
A Highland Brewing Company perennial favorite, Thunderstruck Coffee Porter, is back this October with two coffee infusions. The lightly caffeinated, cool weather beverage is a collaboration between Highland and Dynamite Roasting Company. After an August 12th tour of Dynamite Roasting and a primer on coffee tasting basics, the Highland brewing team got down to business and participated in a “cupping” to determine what roasts and varietals Highland wanted to include in this year’s recipe. The cupping practice, guided by Dynamite owner Andy Gibbon, involves a multi-step process of steeping, smelling and audible slurping (the louder the better) to fully realize the coffees’ characteristics. “There are some really cool parallels in the sensory evaluation of coffee and beer. I’m now able to experience my second favorite beverage with the same amount of depth that I enjoy a good beer,” said Brewmaster Hollie Stephenson. After sampling several varietals, the fully amped group settled on a dark roast Mexican blend for the brew house addition, and a lighter Honduran blend for the post fermentation addition.

Highland Brewing’s Gaelic Ale Available in Cans
Towers of empty ruby red beer cans await being filled and chilled at Highland Brewing. When they are released on September 16, Gaelic Ale will go outdoors in a big way. Brewed and bottled since 1994, 12-ounce cans will be available in all areas where Highland is sold. Gaelic Ale has long been the top-selling native beer in North Carolina. The addition of cans makes the beer more welcome outdoors, which is often where Highland staff are found.

Highland Brewing’s New Seasonal Beer Lost Cove Coming Soon
Get lost this summer with Lost Cove American Pale Ale, a new seasonal beer from Highland Brewing coming in May. Rising temperatures in the South are the perfect setting for this delicately nuanced brew. Lost Cove’s pilsner malt imparts a light body with low bitterness and 4.5% alcohol by volume, accented by the fruit aromas of Cascade hops and the mild fruit and spice accents of Hallertau, a German noble hop. Head Brewer Hollie Stephenson said, “Lost Cove is a thirst quenching, fun, light, sessionable beer with grassy German hops and citrusy American hops. This beer is interesting, its backbone is pilsner malt from the American Midwest, and we fermented it with our house ale yeast, creating a unique spin on an American pale. I’m looking forward to drinking one in the Meadow!”

Happenings at Highland Brewery April 3rd – 4th
It's a fairly normal week at Highland Brewing Company with The Allen Thompson Band playing at the brewery on Friday and Red Honey on Saturday. Highland will be releasing a special small batch brew on Friday, specifically created for the "Re-Happening Event" that takes place this Saturday, April 4th at Camp Rockmont. Re-Happening is an annual event put on by the Black Mountain College + Arts Center that honors the history and significance of Black Mountain College. It is known around the world and just got mentioned in the NY Times.
Information about the small batch brew known as Abstract Black IPA: Opaque and black, delicious aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, loads of citrusy hops and a hint of smoke mingle on the nose, carrying through to a balanced, bitter, roasty middle and finish. Brewed with Columbus, Amarillo and Cascade hops and dry hopped with Equinox, Horizon and Mosaic, there’s no shortage of bright citrus flavor in this beer. It’s like a simple breakfast of black coffee and grapefruit (although, we wouldn’t recommend it for breakfast). ABV - 5%
