Highland Brewing’s New Seasonal Beer Lost Cove Coming Soon

Get lost this summer with Lost Cove American Pale Ale, a new seasonal beer from Highland Brewing coming in May. Rising temperatures in the South are the perfect setting for this delicately nuanced brew. Lost Cove’s pilsner malt imparts a light body with low bitterness and 4.5% alcohol by volume, accented by the fruit aromas of Cascade hops and the mild fruit and spice accents of Hallertau, a German noble hop. Head Brewer Hollie Stephenson said, “Lost Cove is a thirst quenching, fun, light, sessionable beer with grassy German hops and citrusy American hops. This beer is interesting, its backbone is pilsner malt from the American Midwest, and we fermented it with our house ale yeast, creating a unique spin on an American pale. I’m looking forward to drinking one in the Meadow!”

Lost Cove is a legendary ghost town on the Nolichucky River, near the NC and TN border. During the civil war, self-reliant families found refuge, secluded from war and too remote for tax collectors to reach. It was perfect for moonshiners, and they flourished there. Eventually isolation proved too difficult to sustain the community and the last family left in 1957. Today, local rafting guides float by Lost Cove and its abandoned homes in the forest.

The original version of Lost Cove was first brewed on the 3-barrel pilot system and called Young Grasshopper, in honor of a Highland staff member’s newborn son. The name was changed out of the tradition of borrowing seasonal beer names from protected areas of the NC landscape. The Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) permanently protects over 68,000 acres of land in NC and TN. Through a partnership with SAHC, Highland raises awareness of their conservation efforts, raises money with each seasonal release party, and takes part in hikes and habitat restoration efforts. The importance of clean water for beer and Highland’s love of the mountains is a perfect match with SAHC’s efforts.

Join the celebration “For Love of Beer and Mountains” at Highland on May 15, 4-9pm, for the first pints of Lost Cove and free live music from 7-9pm.

Lost Cove will be available beginning in mid-May in 12oz bottles and kegs in all of Highland’s distribution areas.

About Highland Brewing Company

We want to be the brewery of choice in the Southeast. To achieve that goal, we believe it takes more than great beer. With each new hire, it doesn't take long to learn Oscar's mantra: Honesty, integrity and respect. Nothing about beer, not specifically. But the larger ideals that lead to great beer - caring about how it's made, caring for the people involved, from the grain farmer to the mom at the grocery store. Operating within these lines gives rise to a culture around a product. A culture that is sustainable for our employees, our customers and our environment. Come see us!
