Winners of the 22nd Annual Gingerbread House Competition

On Monday, Nov. 17, a full house of spectators and anxious competitors gathered for the awards ceremony of the 22nd Annual Gingerbread House Competition at The Omni Grove Park Inn. More than 150 entries were  evaluated throughout the day by a panel of elite judges, including award-winning chef, Cheryl Forberg, curator from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Nadine Orenstein, author of "Making Great Gingerbread Houses," Aaron Morgan, and others.

New Diamond Brand Outdoors Stores Opening in Asheville

Diamond Brand’s devoted shoppers can now enjoy the best of outdoor gear and holiday shopping at two very special stores in new Asheville locations. On Thursday, November 20th, Diamond Brand Outdoors will open at the Aloft Downtown Hotel, 51 Biltmore Avenue. A second Diamond Brand Outdoors will open on Friday, November 21st in South Asheville’s Biltmore Parkway Centre at 1378 Hendersonville Road next to Liberty Bicycles and The Fresh Market. Official Grand Opening events will take place the following week, December 5th at the South Asheville location and at the Aloft Downtown on December 11th.

I am a transplant to Asheville; yes, I own it. I love Asheville's food scene, but one thing it has never done well until now is boutique style doughnuts. Tired of the same old same old chains like Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme, I have avoided trying to get a good doughnut in Asheville for a long time. This morning I decided to give a third perspective on the two newcomers to Asheville doughnuts: Hole and Vortex Doughnuts (read my review on Vortex here). As new establishments, they both get a little wiggle room in my opinion for working new bugs out of their preparation and customer service experience.
